In one of Stanley Tucci’s italian food programmes, he learned that in Naples during epidemics of cholera etc, deep frying any food - where you could - was protection against transmission of disease. So yes, very authentic. (But even as a native Scot - I just cannot excuse a deep-fried Mars bar!)

Would be great too if BBC colleagues listened to the program before completely failing to explain accurately the same figures in news broadcasts.

Thank you, gentlemen. This is about Reform in Westminster elections, yes? Not at Scottish Parliament level? Food for thought - I appreciate your clarification. Obvs any government influence by Reform is to be avoided….by whatever means.

Why do you think that is the only choice? Genuinely curious.. not being snarky.

It’s also something that people have to care about, and not dismiss other people who believe that quality, style, craft etc should matter. My own mother criticised my ‘fancy ideas’ and prone to inverted snobbery. But she was still proud to wear the outfits I made for her….

I’m with Tom Lehrer: not a huge fan of pigeons in parks…

I’d like to ‘like’ this twice!

I’ve recently discovered this is ‘based on’ a comment made by a character in E.M. Forster “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”

Lovely to get likes - but I’d love an answer. It’s a genuine question e.g. if they are state bar associations then that would be 50 out of 50 therefore marvellous. But if local or county bar associations - then it’s not great. 😐

Genuine question for context - not being snarky: 50 out of how many?

As Scottish family stories go, it’s a bit like Nessie: we’d rather milk the myth than risk proving that it’s not true 🙂 Oh, but I’m tempted though: Ernest David Smith…

Family story is that my grandad was driver (or possibly fireman/stoker) on a world record non stop Flying Scotsman run. So I was told… 🙂

It does say there are additional maps available in the appendix

Thank you. BTW, I am beyond excited to hear from you personally: The Big Picture and Something Deeply Hidden both on my bookshelves - read more than once.

For a UK person, what does ‘to primary’ mean?

Maybe we just don’t want to! Trying to wipe her from our experience…..

Do you mean the programs are ineffective at increasing diversity - or that increased diversity is ‘ineffective’ in leading to ‘better’ science?

Definitely ‘a tool for thinking’. There’s a quote I love, from an academic being interviewed, “I don’t know what I think until I see what I’ve written.” I write it on the flyleaf of every journal/notebook I start.

I love this trilogy: reread it regularly every couple of Christmasses or so. Come to think of it - maybe this is one of those Christmasses… And I recommend ‘The Children of Green Knowe’ as another very special Christmas read.

‘stained glass window’ no attempt at description on three images and what’s with the ALT text in the 4th image? Undermines the whole point for visually impaired readers.

Your effort is worth it: looked up reviews (New Scientist approval!!!!) of your book and it’s now on my Christmas books wishlist.

Can’t do this one…. Am a habitual ‘serial’ reader so how to choose? But…. during chemo in 2021 I was hugely helped and consoled by rereading all of Terry Pratchett in order. Astonishing how much of his essence was there even in the pre-Discworld novels… A master!
