If you live in the US, you are in greater jeopardy today than you were 6 months ago. So is your family. So are your friends & neighbors. Virtually all the important parts of the U.S. gov't created to protect us are being shut down, gutted, or marginalized. My latest. newrepublic.com/article/1968...

Absolutely incredible that we are still getting mainstream denunciations of "trans activists" when the far-right fringe has far more odious views and sits much closer to power.

What the absolute fuck

great thread from David that touches on one thing in particular that’s been bothering me: anti-choice violence has been running through the Christian right for 50 years. this isn’t new. it requires no novel explanation. any discussion that doesn’t center decades of killings/bombings is flat wrong.

Like I said, Trump & Stephen Miller are so bad at this they're giving Kathy Hochul opportunities to flex on them. Unbelievable

Why do politicians always underestimate public support for climate action? Is it state capture by fossil fuel companies? Something less insidious?

Drag me "Let me insist that “the academic” and “the intellectual” are not interchangeable terms: they are not the same thing: they may even be at the opposite ends of the scale. The academic life can actually prevent intellectuals [from] doing serious intellectual work."

Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

This is absolutely how the Constitution is supposed to work. Terrifyingly, it is not how the United States has operated in practice for a very, very long time.

@patblanchfield.bsky.social Is your Gawker piece on Kyle Rittenhouse still available anywhere on the internet?

welcome back arendt

Once again would like to direct everyone to @keithorejel.bsky.social's excellent article on the political economy of the urban-rural divide: lpeproject.org/blog/the-pol...

Good lord.

So many problems in American society are downstream from elite impunity.

🚨Stephen Miller gets his way. Just a few days after Ag. Sec. Rollins convinced Trump to briefly back down, quotas and indiscriminate raids are back. Farms, restaurants, and hotels are now subject to ICE raids again, with intense pressure on ICE to hit 3,000 arrests a day. Miller remains in charge.

Liz Bruenig is the Phyllis Schlafly of Glenn Greenwalds.

MAGA's assault on US research universities — a crucial wellspring of American global power & prestige over the last 75 years — is not the populist uprising it claims to be but rather an intra-elite struggle over universities' public legitimacy & regulatory influence: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJMp...

Trump has been negative on immigration twice; after the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, and after the Stephen Miller quotas went into place and sparked unrest. This is a sign people should be leaning into his outrages to highlight how terrible they are, not running away from the issue.

Thank you, Madam Speaker.

Essential point in this exchange with @willsommer.bsky.social: Trump-Miller have to target noncriminals for deportation because it's the only way to get the numbers they need to try for "full-scale ethnic change." Terror is central to this. Will is very good here: newrepublic.com/article/1968...

Because of my work and writing, I've talked to countless elected officials and their staffers about political violence over the past several years. Mostly Dem, though not all. The collective trauma for these folks is immeasurable and justified. With no recourse. www.semafor.com/article/06/1...

Remember, we *had* a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue, thanks to the JCPOA that Obama put in place after years of hard work, but then President Spiteful Shithead withdrew the U.S. from the pact in 2018 and everything fell apart. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Even the most conservative estimates of turnout (4-6 million) make No Kings the largest protest in American history www.thedailybeast.com/data-guru-g-...

Good overview of the fun house mirror reality in which a huge swath of the GOP rank and file lives. The function of right wing conspiracy theories is to hive off a big chunk of the population into an imaginary world that is impervious to facts and other perspectives. www.readtpa.com/p/the-rights...

Spray paint a Tesla: domestic terrorism Targeted political assassination spree: not terrorism

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

"All told, it’s an unprecedented assault on humanity’s understanding of how global warming is transforming the planet."

Democratic senators need to stop pretending that GOP senators are their “good friends across the aisle” and realize many of them are just lying sociopaths who are actively fanning the flames of violence against them.

political press is doing a real disservice by basically not reporting the nuances of public opinion on deportations, and creating the appearance that most americans support the stephen miller-style gestapo tactics

Trump’s attempts to dehumanize large segments of the American people in order to use military force against them fits the classic definition of “tyranny,” and right wing rhetoric using the phrase “third world” to justify it is no accident (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

holy shit -- acting US attorney Thompson details that Boelter went to the homes of two other elected officials after shooting Hoffman but before going to Hortman's house. One cop encountered him at the third house but thought he was a police officer.

"In matters of foreign policy and national security, the presidency now has the characteristics of a personalist dictatorship...Without constraints, even from elites in the leader’s inner circle, personalist dictators are prone to military misadventures, erratic decisions, & self-defeating policies"

As climate solutions reporter I find many 'solutions' don't scale- or reduce pollution at all. Which is why after months of reporting I want to tell you about Vienna. Vienna has found a way to make affordable housing and combat climate change, all at the same time. Now U.S. cities want in. 🎧⬇️
