After what they called the “Fracture,” people older than the number inscribed on the monolith are gommaged (erased), much like flowers fated to wither.
The new number written on the monolith is 33, forcing those aged 33 to journey across the lands in a desperate quest to kill the Paintress.

Doesn’t mean I’m correct though. It’s just not what I think. I haven’t finished watching someone play so my opinion might change in the future.

At the very beginning of the game, you can spot iconic landmarks (the destroyed Arc de Triomphe and the bent Eiffel Tower >> courbera Eiffel), subtly suggesting that the City of Light is indeed Paris without explicitly stating it. Some people say this land may be La Corse, but I don’t think so…

It wasn’t just about literal light. If light symbolizes goodness, it also encompasses cultural aspects such as music, painting, and cinematography—all of which flourished in Paris.
Therefore, the City of Light here reflects not only technological advancements but also cultural ones

With the arrival of electricity, Paris showcased it through large-scale expositions like the International Exposition of Electricity in 1881 and the 1900 World's Fair, earning the title of "The City of Light” (La Ville de Lumières).

It was one of the periods that France’s culture and invention is at its peak. And plus, France at the time is considered to be the 2nd most powerful country, holding a dominant position in the world of imperialism.
Of course, when it comes to the Belle Époque, we can’t ignore its epicenter, Paris.

I think since the game is inspired by France Belle Époque, there has to be some similarities between the Belle Époque in the game and in the reality.
Remember that this “beautiful period” start with the end of Franco-Prussian war and end with the start of the Great war.

Thank you for the detailed explanation on the symbols hidden in the artwork! I don’t usually see the artist write an explanation about the art they created in detail, but I understand since they’re giving room for interpretation.
