Makes a change for journalists to focus on the positive ecological impact of wolves in the Netherlands. In sum, these large carnivores create a landscape of fear for other species like deer altering their behaviour & creating opportunities for plants, trees, etc. to flourish. nos.nl/l/2570492

🚨 Italy’s Senate Committee on Culture has yet again delayed enforcing a ban on using animals like pigs, mice & rats in research on organ transplants & substance abuse—pushing it to January 2026. The law was passed more than 10 years ago - in 2014! Why does this matter - read below 👇

🧵1) Interesting to read in @politico.eu's newsletter that @transparency-eu.bsky.social has written to @president.europarl.europa.eu complain about EPP MEP Stefan Köhler's conflict of interest & undue influence on the revision of the animal transport Regulation. www.politico.eu/newsletter/p...

🐺Council gives final approval to the new protection status of wolves. 😢A sad moment for all who truly care about the protection of our native species and the need to co-exist with large carnivores. www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/pre...

Abandon all hope all ye who enter EP AGRI committee in quest for better protection for animals. Big pet industry players, vets, NGOs were ALL aligned on legislative proposal re. welfare & traceability of dogs & cats, yet AGRI MEPs STILL manage to screw things up. www.four-paws.be/our-stories/...

In this @euractiv.com discussion, @tillymetz.bsky.social @joswabe.bsky.social and Nancy De Briyne from FVE explore whether the proposal of @ec.europa.eu and the response of @europarl.europa.eu can deliver progress on #animalwelfare during #transport or risk falling short of expectations.

The shamelessness of the fishing lobby posing as the defenders of fish. And scapegoating cormorants and seals to cover up for their over fishing. Supported by the FAO which could maybe more usefully get back to confronting the intensive livestock industry that is choking the sea in shit.

Following interesting discussion at @europarl.europa.eu on the need for an EU-wide positive list for wild animals. Organised by @aap-europe.bsky.social; hosted by MEPs @nielsfuglsang.bsky.social & @manuelaripa.bsky.social

We do indeed! The promise of participatory democracy is that it will also result in concrete & meaningful policy action.

The Italian Senate approved the bill AS 1308, introducing important changes to the regulation of crimes against animals. Read more on our website: www.humaneworld.org/en/news/fina...

Interesting stats from Poland on wolf attacks: "In an area with a total of 4,700 outdoor cattle and horses, over a two-year period, only three calves were likely to have been killed by wolves. No horse attacks were recorded." www.arc2020.eu/eu-throws-th...

I predict that French preemptive #wolf shooting plans will be against EU law, even if #wolves were delisted from Annex IV to V of the Habitats Directive. Why? Because States still have to ensure favorable conservation status. Wildwest shooting risks FCS! cc @julienbetaille.bsky.social @fne.asso.fr

❗The proposal on the EU ban on #lead in ammunition and fishing weights has already sparked debate. Some Member States argue that the ban might risk defence and harm the fishing sector, while lacking evidence. These claims do not hold up under scrutiny. Here’s why: banleadnow.com/news/lead-ba...

The upcoming revision of EU’s chemical law, #REACH, is a critical opportunity to better protect humans, animals, and the environment. Although #animaltesting is meant to be a “last resort” when no #animal-free method is available, countless animals still suffer in cruel chemical tests annually.

🤬 Defective train? Seriously? The Eurocity Direct trains are almost brand new!

Encountered many species of bird while cycling today from Amsterdam to Hoorn. Some were more willing to pose for my camera than others… 🪶

Visited the ‘Amsterdam Eats’ exhibition at the @allardpierson.bsky.social today. Appreciated that attention was paid to the emergence of vegetarian cuisine, as well as the history of traditional treats like the ‘oliebol’ (a kind of beignet). www.allardpierson.nl/en/calendar/...

Forest to fork: Slovakia allows sale of culled bear meat Slovakia's environment ministry had become "a butcher shop, and protected species are on the menu. It’s both tragic and disgraceful," said @martinhojsik.bsky.social. www.euractiv.com/section/eet/...

Slovakia approves sale of brown bear meat to public. Seriously?!!! www.bbc.com/news/article...

On World Animal-Free Research Day, we ask: Why is outdated #animalresearch still being used when better #science exists? The answer lies in funding—most resources still support traditional animal tests, despite their failures.

Following AGRIFISH Council meeting online for AOB point on animal transport. Ironically, Ministers are discussing vaccination as a tool in fight of animal diseases right now. No mention, of course, of transmission risks posed by long-distance transports… video.consilium.europa.eu/event/en/27969

Walked the ARTZUID sculpture biennale route today in the pouring rain. The high point wasn’t the art, but instead hearing a sparrowhawk’s cries. Something I’ve seldom heard in Amsterdam. artzuid.nl/biennale/

Sad to hear that Sebastião Salgado has passed away. His black & white photography was quite remarkable. I can spend hours leafing through his opus ‘Genesis’, which reminds us of the need to protect our planet & indigenous peoples. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Is there a better way to wrap up a packed week than diving into a #PolicyTriangle on animal transport? 🐷 Thanks to @joswabe.bsky.social and Nancy De Briyne from the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe for the interesting discussions. www.euractiv.com/section/heal...

Research into droppings left by the Netherlands’ population of around 100 wolves shows their preferred menu is deer and wild boar.
