🧪 Modern science offers safe, reliable animal-free methods like organ chips and computer models. Italy must enforce the law—for better science & animal welfare. We urge the @ec.europa.eu to act swiftly on a roadmap to replace animal use in research, education & testing. 🐷🧪

🐷 Using animals for research—like generating genetically modified pigs for human transplantation or studying substance abuse—carries serious risks because animal models often don’t match human biology. Scientists and lawmakers know that. That’s why the ban has already been passed.

4) I really do wish that @transparency-eu.bsky.social and/or the folks at @corporateeurope.bsky.social would look take a closer look at the industry lobby on the animal transport issue.
It has been highly orchestrated & likely to torpedo any meaningful progress for animal welfare. /end🧵

3) And b) it has been a deliberate strategy to flood the file with amendments to confound the political process.
This was self-evident in committee during consideration of the amendments on 15th May.
To be fair, Köhler's AMs aren't even amongst the worst of those tabled. Some are OK-ish.

2) Having ploughed through the 3101 AMs to this legislative proposal, it is evident from the sheer number of identical amendments (also highly specific wording & duplicate justifications) from right-wing (but also a few S&D) MEPs that:
a) language adopted directly stems from ag lobby interests...

No. Never. The animal ag industry should stop routinely (& illegally) docking pigs’ tails & instead provide the animals with the proper environmental enrichment needed to meet their complex welfare needs. This is how to prevent & reduce the problem of tail-biting.

Hmm… the fact remains that tail-docking - and other such mutilations - are routinely performed on farmed animals without anaesthesia or analgesia.

Take tail-biting in pigs: it’s a sign of stress and is usually caused by inadequate environmental conditions and management practices. Tail-docking (with or without anesthesia) addresses the symptoms, not the root causes of tail-biting - poor pig welfare.

Don't forget that grey seals are also being blamed for that too.
Shame I can't access the article... :-(

Should be noted that EU ceased preventative vaccination for diseases like FMD in 1990s because they figured it was cheaper to cull 1000s of animals if outbreaks occurred. And meat from vaccinated animals couldn’t be exported.
