New paper out in @plosone.org! šŸ’¤ We examined how concordance btwn self-reported & actigraphy-assessed sleep may change across the perinatal period using @lisamchristian.bsky.social's data across 5 visits from late pregnancy to 12 months postpartum. #perinatalhealth #sleepmeasurement #healthpsych

The White House's proposed FY26 budget would cut NIH funding by >40%. Our new #SCIMaP report projects the budget would lead to economic losses throughout the US with $10M+ lost in almost every House district. scienceimpacts.org/fy26 @joshuasweitz.bsky.social @asinclair.bsky.social @cl10.bsky.social

Apparently being extra careful to be accurate/clear re findings w/ high potential to be weaponized, is now itself getting weaponized by the NYT and SCOTUS. When people like these transphobes go through these ridiculous contortions to ā€œproveā€ their point, it’s a pretty good sign their point is wrong.

SCOTUS just gave states permission to ban gender-affirming medical care for adolescent gender dysphoria (against the advice of all major medical orgs) At least twenty studies have examined the mental health benefits of this care. You can evaluate them for yourself: open.substack.com/pub/jackturb...

šŸ“¢BREAKING: Just left the courthouse for our NIH grant termination case Judge ruled terminations are ā€œVOID & ILLEGALā€ As a plaintiff, I felt a wave of relief & hope; he acknowledged the discrimination & harm Closed by asking, ā€˜Have we fallen so low? Have we no shame?’

🚨 BREAKING: Nearly 4 months the NIH cut its first grants, a judge has ruled that the directives and process that led to cuts are arbitrary and capricious. "The explanations are bereft of reasoning — virtually in their entirety... unsupported by [facts]." Each of them are VOID and ILLEGAL, he says.

Felt really good, in the grander context of everything feeling so terrible, to be part of the energized crowd marching around the statehouse in Providence. Feels even better seeing millions of people showing up across the county in spite of right-wing and state sanctioned violence. #nokings

Genie: ok what do you want for your birthday Trump: a military parade, oh, and also millions of people on the street chanting my name Genie: okie dokie

What a legacy and what a tragedy 19thnews.org/2025/06/rep-...

This is bad. Republicans have fixed the contempt provision in the billionaire bailout bill so bond has to cover the costs. It can’t be $1 anymore. This will neutralize the court’s ability to hold Trump in contempt, and only rich people will be able to file injunctions against the government.

At the @brownowims.bsky.social annual conference, led by the fabulous @drkatiesharkey.bsky.social. Given tight $, this year is virtual, but so great to be in a room w a bunch of badass women from across Brown Biomed who wanted to be in person together anyway for a big watch party! 1/x

I can't stress enough how wrong and disingenuous the most recent wave of COVID revisionism is. The *only period* when Democratic counties had higher death rates was April-May 2020. From June 2020 onwards, Republican laxity and denialism were the most powerful force driving deaths.

I am hiring a clinical research assistant for a project on adolescent cannabis use that will use MRI 🧠 and behavioral tasks šŸŽ® More information is available in the link below, and applicants can send a CV and cover letter to me. Please share—thank you! tinyurl.com/msn8h2ce

Cycle science representing at #ABCT2025!! šŸ©øšŸ”„šŸ©ø On the research side, also presenting new methods for quantifying cycle effects on sx in both adults and adolescents. Talks by @clearlab.bsky.social, Ally Stumper, Peyton Miyares/Lizzie Wilson, and me, with @sheilacrowell.bsky.social as discussant!

Utterly devastating. So many people, in addition to the hate-riddled person who pulled the trigger, have this blood on their hands. May Jonathan Joss’s memory be a blessing, and may the rest of us fight that much harder against the tides of hate inundating our country.

It's also a misunderstanding of what the grants are for. It's not a billion dollar donation, Harvard won the grants to do specific research that it is in a relatively unique position to do. Trade schools aren't going to be able to take over, eg, Harvard's cancer immunotherapy research.

If we stop calling these ā€œgrantsā€ and start calling them ā€œcontracts,ā€ it’s clearer to people why this is such an abuse of power. This wasn’t a bunch of gifts. This was a bunch of binding contracts between researchers and the US govt for specific agreed upon projects.

When something threatens the auto or coal industries, mass hysteria about lost jobs ensues. Where's the collective flip-out about threats to higher-ed? 4.7 million Americans work for higher ed institutions. Even more rely on contract work with them. It is one of the biggest sectors in the US.(1/2)

As I said, just yesterday, the nationwide ban on HRT for all trans people is under way right now in Congress. They've amended the must-pass bill to ban HRT for all ages under Medicaid coverage. The anti-trans pogrom continues to accelerate.

So your research area has been politicized and your federal funding cancelled, what now? I try to give some answers in this opinion piece for @nature.com 1/ www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Amidst all the badness, still super excited to present a ticketed workshop with @clearlab.bsky.social and Jackie Ross on the menstrual cycle at #ABCT2025 @abctnow.bsky.social this fall in New Orleans! (Decisions on talks/posters still to come.)

🚨 New study reveals that when used to summarize scientific research, generative AI is nearly five times less accurate than humans. Many haven't realized, but Gen AI's accuracy problem is worse than initially thought.

We put up coral honeysuckle last year to attract the hummingbirds and it worked! This year we're delighted to discover a cardinal family has built a nest in its gorgeous blooms. It's truly wonderful the fauna that now lives in our suburban native habitat #nativeplants @jrpeters.bsky.social

Another q for the stats people! People worry about collinearity (cf blog post below). Consider a scenario in which the collinear predictors are just controls to account for confounding. Including both of them doesn't impair the precision with which the effect of interest is estimated, does it?

Medicaid cuts in the new budget bill would threaten access to prenatal and postpartum care and could roll back decades of progress in access to ob-gyn care. Congress must not jeopardize patients’ health for budget savings. Learn more: bit.ly/4jVRBdM

About half of all births are covered by Medicaid. Over a third of all kids have health care thanks to Medicaid. More than half of all nursing home residents are covered by Medicaid. So understand this: when the GOP attacks Medicaid, they attack families in every community.

Haven’t posted about this much here, but I’m an avid native plant gardener. This American Painted Lady butterfly who visited yesterday right next to a patch of pussytoes, one of the few plants their caterpillars can eat, is why. Having nature right outside my door is incredible.
