Been there! I peaked early with a baseball glove win. Too bad I suck at baseball.

My precious! Nasty little Hobbitses took it. We must have it back!

So, what happens now? Do they just shake hands and move on? Maybe get Chuck Schumer to lower his glasses and sternly admonish them? This man is a U.S. Senator! There should be consequences for attacking him. For Pete's sake DO SOMETHING!

Any Democratic Party leader who isn't attacked, detained or arrested by these goons is not doing their job. The time for quiet compromise and normalization of right wing extremism has past. We don't need violence. We do need the courage to dissent.

Agreed. I guess I just didn't want people thinking that there is no reason to even try to sue a police department. Now, on to the issue of police unions and local governments ensuring that there are no consequences for individual police officers who actually DO lose lawsuits!

The Martin case, as I understand it, concerns a different issue, the applicability of the "discretionary function" exemption to the Federal Tort Claims Act. Personally, I think that a showing that the police raided the wrong house should be sufficient to establish liability, for several reasons.

I am not an expert in this area, but I am sure that qualified immunity is not absolute. This appears to be a good general discussion of police liability. legalclarity.org/can-you-sue-...

That is not an accurate statement of the law, though I agree that law enforcement has been given way too much deference.

The violence and property damage is not being done by paid actors or government agents. It is not being done by the protesters who genuinely want ICE reigned in. They ARE idiots who just like tearing stuff up and causing chaos, and don't care whose message is obscured or whose cause is hurt.

Even better question: Why have there been more than 86,000 deportations and only seven prosecutions for hiring undocumented immigrants? Could it have something to do with the difference between brown and white?
comment in response to post
Despite the utter lack of respect that Trump has shown to the military, they continue to support him in overwhelming numbers.

On brand - law is not in his lane, but lynching is.

Thanks for the clip! He never fails to delight!

I lived there in the 1970s. The Turkish guest workers were, like many new immigrants, some very hardworking people in low-paid, difficult labor. They were subjected to a great deal of bigotry, stereotyping them as prone to violence and thievery. I hope things are better now.

Germany has an amazing cuisine of their own, but they are also absolutely fantastic at taking dishes from other places and making them German, without disrespecting their origins. Guess that's what you get when your cooks tend to be highly trained professionals.

When I was in the Army, we were taught to use a carefully scripted response to raise our concerns about the the legality of an order without defying it, thereby giving the officer an opportunity to withdraw or modify it. But, ultimately, the risk of refusal falls on the junior service member.

Love the picture of a young, dark haired Albert Lee! I thought he was born with a full head of silver hair.

I see every food group represented there. Not even hungry and now I want a BLT.

Got to admit that while I agree with the sentiment, that picture saddens me. There is nothing to like about wild animals finding themselves trying to survive man-made environments.

I can't tell you how many times I have pointed this out to Alabama Republicans when they start talking smack about Chicago, New York, or LA. I am continually astounded at how thoroughly their worldview is divorced from reality.

Are you genuinely unable to understand what I am saying, or just spoiling for a fight? If you will carefully reread my comment, you will see that I did not call you racist. I called you ageist.
comment in response to post
The sort of generalization you are so fond of is stereotyping. It is the basis of racism, sexism, and all manner of other forms of bias - the term "boomer" is ageist. Anyone who voted for Trump should take responsibility for that. No one who voted against him is, regardless of their demographic.
comment in response to post
Call people out for what they do, not their demographic. You paint with too broad a brush. You could just as easily have called out younger voting age adults for their lack of participation at the polls.

Anything that interrupts Trump's dismantling of the government is good. If it genuinely damages his administration's functioning, so much the better.

Can someone provide context and/or a link? No idea.

Actually, DOGE was highly targeted and extremely successful at achieving its goals. They managed to hamstring several government investigations and regulatory actions into Musk's companies, saving him billions.

Perhaps. But I believe most voters invest far more of their self image in their choice of a candidate than a music festival, or other similar decision.

Am I the only person who thinks that neither Israel or Hamas deserves my respect? I will never defend anyone who calls for "Death to Jews", denies Israel's to exist, and attacks civilians. Israel is not blameless, sanctioning settler violence against Palestinians and conducting a genocidal war.
comment in response to post
Absolutely no reason you can't oppose them all. I would love it if the midterms went so badly for Republicans that they started to fear voters as much as they do Trump.

Nothing could be further from the truth. "You have been scammed" is generally known to be an incredibly difficult thing for people to admit, even to themselves. Scammers rely on it.

I know that it is satisfying to point out that these people caused the problem. Believe me. I feel the same way. But I am not sure that it is useful. There must be a better way to win them over.

That is as unhinged a mini-rant as I have seen today. Please get help.

What's so hard to understand? Trump's immigrant family and friends are White. The ones he is talking about aren't. Did you NOT notice that White South Africans are exempt from his anti-immigrant pogrom? I am not sure how much more explicit he can be.

I have found that there is nothing that will silence a Republican better than a discussion of Mancur Olson's works on public goods and negative externalities.

The Fed was created for exactly this purpose. To manage monetary policy without political interference. Powell is proving himself the man of the hour by doing his duty despite the ravings of a would be despot.

I am not familiar with the issues this post alludes to. Is there an anti-adoption movement? What is this all about?

Aging does come with challenges that can be disqualifying if they aren't managed. But being younger is not a reliable indicator of ability either. I am wary of any young person who seeks validation in the notion that they benefit from some sort of generational competence. It doesn't exist.
comment in response to post
Succeed? You do know this post is about the explosion of a rocket that wasn't supposed to explode, right? I suppose that fits with the typical Republican idea of "success".
comment in response to post
I could be wrong about this, as trying to make any sense of Trump may be a waste of time, but I suspect that Trump's current falling out with the Kremlin is just political theater. Once he makes the point that he's his own man, he will go back to doing Putin's bidding.

I would be happy to see them share a cell for the next decade or two. They are both losers who can't be trusted with national security.

The details of this story tell of someone who was motivated by a madness far worse than his callous disregard for decency in the pursuit of profit. I hope that the authorities are investigating his life in excruciating detail.

Uh, you do know that the Democrats didn't run their old guy, right? Funny how the age issue quit instantly quit mattering to Republicans, isn't it.
comment in response to post
Tapper's big reveal was that the guy the Democrats decided was too old was, wait for it, too old. Maybe he should address the pressing issue of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt now. I have heard rumors of the press being complicit in some kind of coverup.

And yet, they are both relevant to the history of home ownership in the United States.
comment in response to post
Finally, it worth noting that large segments of the population were extremely limited in terms of their opportunity to own a home, (often explicitly by law). Even when their right to own property was recognized, people of color and women were denied access to credit.
