I am conducting a survey of women’s experiences of accessing financial credit since banking deregulation in Australia. I will use the results of this survey in an academic article. Survey closes end of May 2025. unesurveys.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

An expensive way to make scrap.

if the whole world population had emitted as per the richest 0.1% since 1990, the global temperature increase would have been 12.2C 😲

Oh yeah nice one kid hook that hope for humanity right into my veins

it's jolting how little AI skepticism has reached the general public. i've had many acquaintances ask whether i use AI for research and seem shocked when i tell them it's completely useless for that purpose. my wife recently told her colleagues about hallucinations and it was news to all of them.

yes, ChatGPT is in schools; there are K-12 school districts and DOEs entering into AI contracts, too. so rather than panicking over the death of academia as a foregone conclusion—particularly when LLMs are frequently wrong—why don't we talk about the climate costs of AI? my latest @teenvogue.com

The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?

For a third successive year, the Australian and Queensland governments have been put on probation for their management of the health of the Great Barrier Reef with the Reef sufferings its fifth mass bleaching event in eight years

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

INCREDIBLE TURNOUT with hundreds of thousands of people attending #HandsOff rallies around the US to protest illegal cuts and government corruption ✊ #nyc #newyork #boston #ma #chicago #il #stpaul #minneapolis #mn #saltlakecity #ut #washington #dc

This! Research shows that protests 1) raise awareness, 2) empower people (especially the disadvantaged), and 3) exert pressure on elites. Anyone saying they don’t work is unfamiliar with the research and the history of movement building.

Biggest scandal in the 89 year history of the program IMO

I can’t stop thinking about this framing when it comes to climate. And I don’t mean “doom” as in “I feel badly about this situation,” but as in “it’s too late.” Someone responded to my post about the impact of climate activism yesterday calling it hopium. Two people who follow me liked it.

Yep. Media, do your fricken job

From a source: “Just had a co-presenter for a buildings research conference bow out. She’s a dual citizen and the FBI came knocking to ask her about her involvement in coauthoring chunks of the Paris Agreement. Climate science is being literally (and I mean literally) criminalized.”

In 2012 Musk said easy, cheap return trips to Mars would be ready by 2022 at best, and 2027 at worst. It’s all just entirely made up! He just says things.

Watching a man get disappeared for political dissent in the middle of the United States, as the opposition party agrees to give the tyrant a blank check to do whatever he wants

One thing that doesn't stop being weird and troubling about LLM use is just how many university-educated, professionally fulfilled people find the task of writing laborious, extra-mural, or somehow an imposition.

Just checking in where we’re at with cancel culture — oh, okay www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...

Writersky is talking about writers and ages again, so it bears repeating: there is no expiration date on writers except for death. Up until your last day, you can be writing, you can be published, you can be produced, you can sell. There's no "Too late." Only you can decide when your done.

With Hurricane Alfred bearing down on Queensland and currently projected to settle just north of Brisbane, I'm just going back over some of my old reporting: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Congratulations to No Other Land on the Oscar unfortunately it won't be able to screen as part of any Australian university courses due to the new definition of antisemitism

I’m constantly grappling with the fact that a huge proportion of under 35s report exclusively getting their news from influencers on short form video (either directly or shared by friends) but there’s basically no reporting on who the most politically influential Australian content creators are?

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

This was just posted on President Trump’s Truth Social account.

Quit buying shit, write poems, live más

Imagine being as rich as Ed Sheeran, and describing one of your childhood friends as 'barely getting by' in what would become a widely successful song.

You do not need to stop to reassess your purpose or intention to write. This is creative writing. It's like having high functioning anxiety except you're writing it down and calling it a book. Give in to the spiral.

This is the core asymmetry of left-vs-right media; it's not that the left is less skilled at communication, it's the the right has wholeheartedly accepted the idea that there is no such thing as objective reality — and that lying to win is ok. That's not a frame the left should replicate.

What we need is less attention on salacious neo-Nazi media stunts and more on their cult-like child grooming, child recruitment and coercive control tactics. We need to be better informed about what's really going on with the NSN. read my new article: independentaustralia.net/politics/pol...

I'm gonna be a broken record about it. Feeling down? Do something. Feeling helpless? Do something. Feeling scared? Do something. (Yes, yes, yes, do what you need to not burn out, and to make life worth living / keep culture alive and vibrant.) Action empowers. It refreshes. It builds community.

Thank you, Janet Mills. This is how all our elected officials everywhere should be confronting Trump's authoritarian "we are the law" sentiment. Head on.

and naturally, conservatives that love to wheel out those "you have a right to be a bigot" free speech arguments will stay dead silent when an actually egregious act of censorship occurs

"There was a protest at a gas conference, and the next day, the South Australian Parliament changed the law. The next day they criminalised protest. "If protest was ineffective, why would they do that?" - Executive Director @richarddenniss.bsky.social at our #ClimateIntegrity Summit 2025 #auspol

We're in the poetry unit now, so I shared this with my English 102 class as the most brilliant example of a concrete poem I've ever seen. They also loved the existence of @tacobellquarterly.org—but honestly, who wouldn't? 🌮📖

Another great @yourewrongabout.bsky.social episode, on how terms get diluted when popularised. A missed opportunity at the end was to talk about Hochschild other book 'The Second Shift' which describes the additional work women do in the household.
