Elon threatening to just leave people on the ISS is making a pretty good case for why you nationalize your space program!

What today feels like

And in a single tweet, Elon shows why Republican plans to privatize NASA, the National Weather Service, Social Security, or any other program we rely on, have always been dangerously stupid.

This is what is happening to the US scientific enterprise.

You've heard about the catastrophic cuts to U.S. scientific leadership the Trump Administration has proposed. This chart from Joshua Weitz (joshuasweitz.bsky.social‬) shows just how bad it is—funding levels for NASA, NSF, and NIH so low as to destroy science in America. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!

Team California takes on the Senate at @agu.org’s Day of Action! 💚🌎

Pride Month question: are any of the planets straight? Discuss.

ending a particularly “lovely” day on lab by walking the dogs, and alternating between calling my representatives and listening to the Andor soundtrack…

The 2025 #NASA astrophysics senior review report is public. "Every mission received the highest possible rating for... scientific return", & are "producing important, impactful science in a cost-effective manner". Some important screenshots: assets.science.nasa.gov/content/dam/...

This is terrible. But also, important to realise: these people are consumed with hate and fear. They are driven to spectacle to hide the fact that deep down inside, they are nothing but scared, useless, little privileged boys that use attack as a form of defence, to create the illusion of success.

It is so weird how there are no players out in the MLB...

I am furiously, flamingly, incandescently, *supernova-levels* of angry right now. Trump is trying to kill NASA science. And hoo boy, do I have something to say about it. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/trump-thre... 🔭 🧪

#NASA funding boosts the economy across the entire US 🧪🔭🪐

Following the inspiration of @ohdearz.bsky.social @theplanetaryguy.bsky.social @jtuttlekeane.bsky.social here’s the NASA fleet with the proposed budget cuts. Red X’s will be fully defunded, green X’s will lose all NASA funding but have other funding sources, and exclamation point means >50% cuts

this is the most sociopathic thing ive ever seen and i wrote a whole book about neonazis

how it feels going to pride today

Jared 'Rook' Isaacman's nomination for NASA Administrator is being withdrawn. This is bad news for NASA but maybe a good thing for Jared himself though, since being NASA head right now is a bit of a Kobayashi Maru scenario. Rumour is he will be replaced by someone more gungho about slashing NASA

White House says Trump will soon announce new nominee for NASA head reut.rs/4khSkWF

Four charts showing the extent of cuts to NASA in the FY26 budget: - Cuts to every science division - Smallest science funding since 1984 - 19 active, inflight missions cancelled - Smallest NASA budget since FY 1961

Canceling OSIRIS-APEX, a paid for spacecraft on its way to the biggest news asteroid of 2029, makes no sense and damages our ability to conduct planetary defense.

Inspired by @jtuttlekeane.bsky.social and @ohdearz.bsky.social, here's what the White House proposed budget cuts to NASA would do to the entirety of the agency's Science Mission Directorate. Bloodbath is right.

Well, that's the presidential proposed USGS budget for FY26. It’s not just NSF and NASA that would be taking earth science research hits if it's enacted.

The US scientific enterprise is about to collapse unless we do something about it.

The fact that the U.S. is turning inward and potentially set to decimate the science from its own space program while China is offering up its recently returned lunar samples for researchers around the world to analyze speaks volumes as to how the tides of science are going to shift.

To me the most insane part of the proposed white house budget cuts to science is that they hardly save any money! They do not reduce the deficit in any meaningful way! We spend a small amount of money on science, which has yielded incredible returns.

TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR, THE PROPOSED NSF BUDGET CUTS NEARLY A QUARTER OF A MILLION PEOPLE FROM NSF ACTIVITIES. FOR INSTANCE, JOBS.

What is the fastest way to make China Great In Space? Simple: just do this one thing to the #NASA budget. #Slash

Announcing you are cutting STEM education programs by including a photo of kids learning from said programs.

I had the great privilege this week of giving a lecture at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum about the possibility that there were once oceans on the surface of Venus, and why missions like DAVINCI and VERITAS are critical to answering big picture questions about planetary habitability🧪🔭

if astronomy only fights for astronomy we’re fucked

Look: I am doing my absolute best to take my own advice and not freak out on main, but among the cuts in that PBR is my literal, specific, job. Now is not the time for "what has NASA done for real people lately" cracks. It pays my fucking rent, I am a real person, get a fucking grip.

There is an economic multiplier to every science dollar spent. Just from the University of Arizona, the proposed cuts to NASA/NSF could pull hundreds of millions of dollars out of the southern Arizona economy. We are a place that has "Space is Wildcat country" banners on poles.

My people, we need two LIGO sites to prove sources are astrophysical and not, like, a rabbit hopping nearby. ⚛️

The proposed NASA and NSF cuts feel like when ISIS destroyed the monuments of Palmyra with sledgehammers. These things not only pay for themselves, they return several dollars for every $1 spent. Kill the science, kill the spin-offs, startups, patents, talent pool and global influence.

Jupiter's powerful lightning storms most likely generate lots of transient luminous events. In this scene, during the early morning hour, as the rising sun lights up the top of a massive thunderstorm a lightning strike generates a gigantic jet, shooting high up in the atmosphere.

BREAKING: The president's budget request just hit Congress, which could usher in a dark age for NASA space science. Congress has the final say, but you can help shape the outcome by adding your name to our global petition. This is just the start of our fight. Sign the petition: planet.ly/petition
