Eldritch horror on a #novascotia beach.

Forgive me for writing a second thread in one day, but this new analysis led by @mark-ungrin.bsky.social deserves your time and attention. osf.io/preprints/me...

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

Indigenous hydrogeology for the win! And historians for discovering that early (and lost) technology. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Brighten your day. Historian rediscovers a pre-Incan method of water storage, gets money to restore the existing structures, and the town he grew up in now has access to water 10 hours a day, up from 1/2 hour per day. The details are v. cool. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Brian Wilson had struggled with #LongCovid for his last few years. "There was no trauma to speak of until that very last tour in ’22. He kind of went silent and began to suffer the effects of long-term COVID...that was a turning point for him. He became detached." uk.news.yahoo.com/brian-wilson...

The chilling virus fact? It spreads through the air. My peeps... this should not be chilling at all anymore. We should have invested a stack of money into air safety already... www.thesun.co.uk/health/35366...

“Higher risk” of what? Hospitalization from a COVID infection? Long COVID? Passing COVID onto a patient or a child? Passing it onto others at higher risk of hospitalization or Long COVID or who might pass it onto a patient or a child? It’s a pandemic. We sink or swim together.

Entire Fulbright board quits, citing Trump administration interference

This is especially chilling given governments’ AI-will-save-money fantasies (and the clear use of AI by the current US govt). Public policy is a lot more complicated than chess, and the stakes for unintended consequences are a lot higher. futurism.com/atari-beats-...

Google and Meta search both report that Cape Breton Island has its own time zone 12 minutes ahead of mainland Nova Scotia time because they are both drawing that information from a Beaverton article I wrote in 2024

Publication alert: "No evidence of immune exhaustion after repeated SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in vulnerable and healthy populations" ‪@natcomms.nature.com‬ The backstory is particularly interesting-it's a tale of the conflicting needs of scientists & decision makers in times of disinformation ....1/n

Let’s be clear: ICE injured and detained the president of SEIU California for peacefully observing. ICE picked the wrong side. The wrong state. The wrong person. and the wrong union. David Huerta stood up. And now 750,000 SEIU workers are standing up behind him. seiuca.org/press-releas...

Kids with Long Covid need support and treatments. We also need to prevent further infections by stopping the spread. our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/cl...

This. SO MUCH THIS. Lazy thinkers who can’t be arsed to do one-tenth of the painstaking work that educators and researchers consider an integral part of their jobs and instead just throw decades of educational and program development into the nearest blender. Yes, I’ve seen this up close.

The IGA has arrived! #GothsAssemble

Here's a preview of this important document (worth sharing with all your scientists & researchers). Link to the PDF 👇

This part of the Ottawa Declaration of the Science Academies of the G7 is relevant to Tim Houston's efforts to undermine #nspse independence, viability, and credibility:

Weird slide here from "research" to just "science" in the last two paragraphs, esp. given the attacks on research and teaching in history, literature (even books in libraries), sociology, etc., but this is still a much-needed statement of principle: rsc-src.ca/sites/defaul... . #cdnpse

Universal school masking reduced weekly COVID-19 deaths by 0.57 per 100k people. 50 percent of districts removed mask requirements by spring 2022 contributing to 9 percent of COVID deaths that year, from Guzman, Imberman, Filosa, Kilbride, and Malkus https://www.nber.org/papers/w33849

#ShockedNotShocked We've already seen them try out this approach with the pandemic: we're all going to get sick, so why do anything to reduce infection rates? those who are older etc. are going to die sooner, so why do anything to delay it? It's morally and practically indefensible--and repugnant.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Remember that scene in The Meaning of Life when they roll the machine that goes “ping” into the operating theatre because they paid a lot for it? That’s AI. It’s the machine that goes ping. Also, I’m glad I use another email app for my Gmail. 😀 arstechnica.com/google/2025/...

My aunt, the doctor, told me a new joke. She asked: How bad is the new Covid variant? I replied: I don’t know, how bad is it? And she answered: The new Covid variant is so bad that the media is having to report on it. And then neither of us laughed.

Omg and so much this in #cdnpse (from the article about a hospital): “The organization is data rich but has been information poor with regards to management decision making.”

Sounds just like a university: admin bloat and lots of turnover are no way to steer a steady course, or even figure out how things work. #chaos #cdnpse www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Not sure we realize the role education played in vaccination and pandemic outcomes. Canada's high education level helped us weather vax disinformation. "education was the strongest area-level predictor of vaccination and booster uptake after controlling for age" pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

With all of this talk of loss of trust in institutions, do you think the powers-that-be realize how much of it is inside the house--professionals, academics, and businesspeople who see a damaging pandemic rage on while politicians pretend nothing is happening and ignore easy fixes? #ASHRAE241

UPDATE: All Schulich buildings have reopened after they were closed temporarily today due to a police investigation into a bomb threat that targeted multiple exam sites in Canada this morning. Police found nothing suspicious on Western’s campus. westerngazette.ca/news/schulic...

Yes to this. Our registration/waitlist “system” is chaos and the registrar’s office sends all students who can’t register—for whatever reason, incl tech issues—to the instructor, and we have had zero training on that system. I spent more time on this than an important committee last year.

Dear governments, You dug a deep, deep hole with austerity, leaving staffing shortfalls, outdated equipment, and crowded waiting rooms and classrooms. AI is not the EZ-install elevator that will lift you out. Sincerely, The Real World

If you don’t want to take the booster don’t. But to prevent adults from having the choice is depraved.

Over 90% of reported Nova Scotia Covid deaths have occurred after protections were removed.

If you ever smoked a cigarette you are a former smoker and therefore qualify for a vaccine.
