I wonder if it's like a lot of the long-run live streamers, where they know the audience has them on in the background? Makes economic sense if you're getting paid by watch/listen time (e.g. ad breaks). Lends itself to consistent vibe but meandering and repetitive substance.

In the open source world, they often just drop money on people to continue what they're already doing. Makes it feel easy and unproblematic to accept. But of course they have a reason for what they select to fund that the people funded may not appreciate. Unclear how similar the academic funding is.
