So is Starmer taking his example from #47?

You’ll be very lucky if it’s paid for in 15 years.
The UK made its last payment back to the US for its WW2 loan on 31 December 2006, 61 years after the war ended

It’s Kefalonia, btw. I honeymooned there. Lovely island. Best is Fiskardo at the northern tip - the only village in the island not devastated by the 1953 earthquake

Oh the irony of that particular Kamov Ka32 - destroyed by fire in April 2024 after an arson attack

I have 1.4 Concordes within ten minutes walk of my house. The 40% scale model which used to grace the top of the road tunnel at Heathrow is one of them. The other was a prototype, now painted up in BA colours

Removing any political angle, anyone bowing (grovelling) to #47 is a loser. DT is the architect of US and world destruction and I hope he doesn’t take too many other countries down with him

Is he just sitting there in la-la land with his fingers in his ears?

This is so CHEAP
In the UK we have Diesel at c$6.97 per US litre and standard petrol/gas at c$6.77. The latter is E10, ie 10% ethanol and has an octane rating of 95

Staggeringly poor discipline. US citizens should be ashamed of the shoddy leadership demonstrated here. This group (certainly not worthy of being called an army) couldn’t organise a booze-up in a brewery!

I got into Mensa while I was at university, winning a bet with a fellow student. I included “member of Mensa” on my resume/CV for the next 30 years, and was asked about it on EVERY subsequent interview. The back story brought smiles. I never let on my IQ score, and was never asked either.

Todd Beamer was another hero on that flight. His widow Lisa was five months pregnant on that day. She wrote this very moving book about it all. I recommend it. Have tissues ready

Who insisted on suit wearing? Here is Churchill visiting the White House during WW2

These were only examples that sprang to my mind at the time. There are others, and as some roles wind down, others arise. More options are open to those willing to retrain.
It's good that you are thinking about it now, and not 12 months time

Do you know how powerful AI is?
comment in response to

There are many methods of education. We are just limited by the laws of the country we each live in, and how the government of the day wrote the laws. Eg school hours, teacher to pupil ratio, what is taught in each subject etc
Look how Khan Academy turned learning on its head, for example

It’s not just oligarchs that use AI. Self-employed entrepreneurs can build an organisation of AI personas without needing to employ anyone.
I’m including definition of “oligarch” for reference

Or, looking at it another way, AI provides the opportunity for other job types (which are not dependent on AI) to flourish. Eg Plumber, electrician
And new jobs will emerge which are created by the opportunities AI brings. Eg helping set up an AI powered video channel on YouTube for a personal blog

AI has the power to tailor learning at the individual level, and it will work out how old the child is without needing to ask
comment in response to

No, but get into AI now so you are ahead of the curve - I expect the curriculum will adapt to the learning advantage it brings
comment in response to

And over time, AI will learn the individual skill of the child and adjust the depth of knowledge provided at the right pace for that child.
AI will revolutionise learning. Let’s hope Government Education Departments keep up and adjust the curriculum in line with AI advances

It will be different jobs, not list jobs. When the motor car was invented, farriers lost their work due to a lack of requirement to shoes horses. But new jobs opened up making vehicle parts and servicing vehicles
You could retrain to roles that will not be affected by AI eg plumber, electrician

Not at all. Profit is good as it encourages innovation and entrepreneurship. It just has to be done in the context of respecting people. EQ is so important.

My point is that these retailers are just as profit focused (and visibly money-spending) as each other.
Thus wondering if any of them could be classed as any ”better” (by whatever measure) than the others

You are aware, I assume, that Costco has five private jets? Four Gulfstream G280s for flights mainly within USA, and a Gulfstream G650ER for flying to other continents

Which orgs MUST adopt this new app? One app will stifle competition and likely limit innovation, surely?
I’m happy with multiple apps, so don’t see a need for this new one

@ericlipton.nytimes.com by using the word “solicited” do you mean that the Trump team SOUGHT OUT this aircraft? Ie they initiated the transfer/sale/donation/whatever

I’d never heard of a sapsucker before and this (to me) looked like a woodpecker, of which we have three types here in the UK. Looked it up and now understand the differences

Is Musk buying Scotland?
comment in response to

It would be more than reasonable to ask what competitor systems were consider, and in what grounds they were rejected
Just as a batch of South American countries cancelled Starlink contracts in the last week, valued at $29 billion apparently
Is Musk trying to buy Scotland?
