i feel like the imperative to consume and the imperative to produce are two sides of the same coin? neither are inherently bad, and both can be very fulfilling, but trying to consume less BY producing more seems… like redirecting the problem

same here. i feel like the reluctance to talk about parents' financial support only better enables universities to run on the back of uncompensated grad student labor. like, yeah we shouldn't be relying on our parents. we should be paid for the literal work we do.

american culture at large works hard enough to obscure the markers of class without us doing it to each other lol. i want my fellow grad students to succeed and i want to give them all the information i can.
