My mother's garden today.

It was a great pleasure to host colleagues from St Gallen and from the RIA yesterday to see some of the famed A mss collected by the Irish Franciscans, curated by UCDA. The Words on the Wave exhibition opens on 30 May and promises to be extraordinary.

There *must* be an early modernist out there who (a) has a full set of Samuel Pepys' diaries on their shelves; and (b) points to those shelves every time someone asks them how they would describe themselves as an academic and says, "these are my Pepys".

Open AI’s valuation is at $400 billion. They used about 190,000 books to train their plagiarism bot. Randomly saying 25% of their value comes from that stolen dataset, I think they owe the authors about $526,000 per stolen book.

They admit our work has value but they just refuse to pay for it.

First punnet of Wexford strawberries making their way to Dublin on the bus this year. Many more to follow...

Eamon de Valera to Republican forces after Cease Fire/Dump Arms order #OTD 1923: The Republic can no longer be defended successfully by your arms...The sufferings which you must now face unarmed you will bear in a manner worthy of men who were ready to give their lives for their cause.

Foxgloves in my brother's garden.

What this article does not mention is that it survived the #17thc because it was preserved by the historian Sir James Ware. All in his letter to Archbishop Ussher dated 21 September 1627, which includes references to many other valuable Irish medieval manuscripts

Dublin & booky peeps. I have two spare tickets for Rebecca Solnit at @ilfdublin.bsky.social this Friday at 8pm. I've got a horrible Summer cold & I don't want to cough for an hour & spread my germs. No need to pay, I'd just rather the seats weren't wasted! ilfdublin.com/whats-on/fes...

Shocking footage from our news wires from Jenin, West Bank, where the IDF fired “warning shots” at a group of diplomats and officials that included two from the Irish Embassy in Ramallah.

Still one of my favourite documents. Quotidian concerns continue in the midst of rebellion and change.

I honestly don't know how we can bear this? How is this tolerated?

RIP Paul Durcan. This was the first poem I read by him, and it absolutely broke me.

Not a single piece of bread, glass of water, or medicine has been allowed to reach #Gaza since Israel resumed its bombardment and siege. Ireland needs to pass the Occupied Territories Bill now. No watering it down, no delays and no half-measures. Enough is enough. #PassTheOTB #CeasefireNow

Went to see Sinners with some of my neices and nephews. Loved every minute of it.

Waiting for the bus. Glorious day.

Everything about Adam Loughrane's story is an indictment about both mental health care and justice services in Ireland.

The latest post on the @ucdlibrary.bsky.social Cultural Heritage Blog is now online. Kate writes about some interesting documents in the De Valera papers concerning Irish neutrality. ucdculturalheritagecollections.com/2025/05/02/i...

I couldn’t attend the launch unfortunately, but this looks like a fascinating exhibition of works by a fascinating figure. I look forward to seeing the exhibition soon. Many congratulations to my former UCD Library colleague, @katymilligan.bsky.social, and to @emilymfg.bsky.social!

By some distance the most moving piece from this latest issue of @thefence.bsky.social; a personal essay from Georgia Brown about family and childhood, that also serves as a searing survey of the British borstal system. A must read.

May he rest in peace. I remember him speaking that evening and how devastating his words were. I remember too, the grace with which he spoke about his wife and what her love meant to him.

The last story in this piece is one of the most harrowing things I've heard. The Sudanese refugees I met in Chad have suffered so much and are suffering so much and they are so kind, generous and dignified. www.irishtimes.com/world/africa...

Getting ready to leave and return to the hustle and bustle of city life...

Superb essay. “This (CJEU judgement) is not a novel application of data protection law. It is exactly what the law has always been intended to achieve- it is a recognition that, all other things being equal, a person should be empowered to be the primary author of their own life.”

I don't usually post Works in Progress for a Gist, but you might want to subscribe if you're interested in this one on the UK ruling on the definition of a woman and the CJEU's ruling on that a trans person's identity is derived from their life, not their status at birth. link, to get it thegist.ie
