I'm pretty sure TVs with remotes did exist but my parents had a TV so they weren't about to upgrade any time soon. They used that tv for eleventy billion years. By the end of its lifespan you had to turn it on several minutes in advance to let it warm up in time. And the screen had gone quite green.

This blithe statement really demonstrates to me how many Kiwis in NZ still don't seem to realise the burden that was shouldered by Kiwis living overseas in order to protect them.
