And what protest crowds also defending is our right to protest. Our right to not be beaten up or kettles by the police or legislated against for merely standing in a group in a square or holding a procession down a street.

Yours sincerely, From me being very tired of statements like "Chartism/suffragettes/labour movements were a failure because parliament didn't pass laws in their favour immediately "

The organisation, solidarity, public awareness and all the other aspects that result from mass demonstrations are success in itself, often done despite or indeed inspite of full knowledge by the movement's leadership that MPs in parliament aren't going to listen to you at that point in time.

I have a tendency to get a bit defensive at this point. If a group - say the Chartists - can gather and organise successive mass peaceful protests, involving thousands of people, that's not failure. 2/n

Smells of drains occasionally, which adds to the southern Europe city centre feel

Hot beetroot soup (with beef stock, lamb and potatoes) is a hearty winter dish. Warm šaltibarščiai is... curdled?

Not sour enough for me. Perhaps I should have used gherkins instead of cucumber

Remember it is dark wet and cold for 8 months of the year. Now I can go sunbathe and swim in the lido.
