In the 50s we went everywhere, biked miles across busy roads, played in the streets, organized our own games. Mom’s guidance was “Go out and play.” We fell down and got hurt, argued with friends, cried, and figured things out for ourselves. We could be out and about on our own until dinner time.

She is one of my absolute heroes. She breathed life into this institution and made it feel like it is truly of and for the people. I am so freakin angry about this, and terrified that the next person will set about to destroy and revise our history.
