So did the Gestapo.

Disappointed by this framing, @npr.org. 🦠 Germ theory isn't just “widely accepted”—it is experimentally proven and foundational to the success of modern medicine. Miasma theory isn’t a competing view...It was discarded because it explains essentially nothing. It's like believing in the Tooth Fairy.

Your letter to the editor is fantastic, @clairelamman.bsky.social! I love how you framed how cuts to science funding at a federal level hurt local residents in your town (and all across the U.S.)

Raghu's presentation would be an equally great resource for helping U.S. grad students understand how they are funded and for helping us all talk with neighbors and family about how cutting science funding means not training talented grad students for careers in science & technology

Go, Greg! The 1st Amendment is meant to protect protesters who "peaceably assemble to speak out about their grievances against government policies... The government should not punish nonviolent protesters because other protesters, or other people adjacent to the protest, are committing violent acts"

Thank you, Senator Murray! I agree with you that current delays and impoundment of funds that have already been approved for research grants are devastating for the US economy and for the health of its citizens, as are the proposed future cuts to scientific and medical research. @murray.senate.gov

Go, Greg! "When government beneficiaries agree to say what the president wants, when the government intimidates speakers into silence, and when the government sharpens its own speech into propaganda [it does] what 1st Amendment law exists to prevent: using official power to make speech less free."

It was easy to call my members of Congress today... all I did was quote from this week's issue of @economist.com. I agree with the assessment that when the US slashes funding for scientific research, it is the US "that will feel the pain most of all... It is first and foremost an act of self-harm"

We are looking for a postdoc to study biomolecular condensates and/or mechanosensitive membrane proteins. Please help spread the news 🙏 sites.rutgers.edu/shi-lab/look...

Here’s something we can all do: every time we see something about the Trump administration’s attacks on science — and the impacts of those attacks — boost it. People, and even faculty, have no idea how bad it is and how much worse it’s going to get. We need to let people know…

Today we have @jonesylab.bsky.social taking over our social media and giving us insights into her #PI life! 🤩 Stay tuned! #BIBPSWeek

Hi @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social - I'm excited about these talks today. I followed your link, signed into my BPS account, and am trying to find a place to sign up or get a zoom link for the seminars. They are in ~3 hours... but can't find anything. What am I missing? @myphysicsjourney.bsky.social

True! Our designs for pipes that act as Tesla valves were indeed directly inspired by your basic biological research! Our work was also strengthened by your team sharing original data from CT scans. Data sharing is a common benefit of government-funded basic research; it is unusual in industry.

This response by @jeremymberg.bsky.social is powerful. Saying the US does more than its share of scientific research is "like saying we're getting more than our share of economic growth", given our 2 1/2 fold return on every dollar invested in research. Forbes says cuts will cost the US $10bn/yr.

Would you like to write for New Scientist? We always work with freelancers, but occasionally I put out a call like this for new writers. I'm looking for 300-700 word news stories about new discoveries. Don't pitch us press releases or the big journals, we have those covered. Pay starts at 51p/word

It is vital to keep the NIH free from partisan influence! If you need sample text w/ subpart & section citations to (re)submit to www.federalregister.gov/documents/20..., some is kindly provided by @paulrathouz.bsky.social below. Full text to cut/paste is in his feed or see the screenshot he posted

Deadline extended to June 7th. Please join me in leaving your comments to keep NIH directors nonpartisan and focused on science. For tips about the most effective and efficient way to quickly submit your comments, see @jeremymberg.bsky.social's posts, maybe starting here: bsky.app/profile/jere...

So grateful to the Friends of the Burke-Gilman Trail who have been replacing invasive plants with pollinator habitat. It's beautiful. Balmy summer weather is here, so if you'd like to get outside and play in the dirt, sign up at www.seattleparksfoundation.org/get-involved... (search for "Burke")

Called your members of Congress today?

A figure is worth a thousand words-- especially true for scientific papers. Great article by double major in journalism and biology @mckennasweet.bsky.social . Thanks to @kaytrue.bsky.social for getting me into the UW Daily!

Please join me to comment at 2 US websites. Fast! Easy! Even if no short term change, it can change the future! Due May 23 (3 days) 1) OPM-2025-0004: BAD! NIH Directors political hacks instead of health professionals 2) FDA-2025-N-1146-0001: BAD! Covid vaccines only if 65+ yrs See info below in 🧵

Congratulations to Beeta and Bahar, who grew up after this photo to become biochemistry majors at @uwchemistry.bsky.social and have now earned their PhDs. Well done, Dr. Heydari and Dr. Heydari!

The UW Daily (@thedailyuw.bsky.social) also has a powerful article by @mckennasweet.bsky.social on "UW students, alumni affected by federal attacks on science". The loss of jobs and future opportunities to our graduates is devastating. www.dailyuw.com/news/uw-stud...

Very nice article by UW undergraduate @mckennasweet.bsky.social on @drdavidhu.bsky.social's lecture at @uwchemistry.bsky.social in which McKenna explores how David found inspiration for some of his scientific directions and how he communicates his results effectively: www.dailyuw.com/science/mosq...

Great new tool to help folks volunteer to speak out and share information with the press (even on background, anonymously) actionnetwork.org/forms/sign-u...

Medical cures are born in fundamental basic science. The CRISPR technology used in this amazing study arose from experiments to understand bacterial immune systems. This is basic science discovery, which fuels innovation and creates jobs.

Given that universities are non-profits, this move severely endangers institutions dedicated to training the next generation of skilled workers in the U.S. I called my members of Congress today to ask them to oppose this part of the tax bill that can suspend the tax-exempt status of any non-profit

A U.S. poll published April 27, 2025 shows >75% of respondents oppose reductions in federal funding for medical research, and 70% oppose efforts to increase the government’s role in the operation of private universities. (www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

I know you all know this, but apparently it needs to be said that basic science is a NECESSARY PRECURSOR to translational science

This website has many things to make it easier and faster for you to advocate for the National Science Foundation, including templates for a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, suggested talking points, scripts for calling/writing members of Congress, and templates for social media slides

Honored to host @drdavidhu.bsky.social for today's Cross Lecture. The plaque was made by UW's Salvage Wood Program. Grateful for National Science Foundation funding that enabled David's research and to donors to UW Chemistry who enabled David to share his results with us. @uwchemistry.bsky.social

Thank you @murray.senate.gov. I agree we all need to speak up (though, of course, your voice is more effective than your constituents - please fight for us). Everyone's effort is needed to reverse devastating cuts so the NSF, NIH, NOAA & NWS can get back to important work they do for the public good
