We had a screen printing room we could use back in college in the 90s - made our own tee shirts every semester until they scrapped it my senior year. Looking back, the subtle imperfections of those shirts made them favorites

difference is mostly semantic - this is a (totally foreseeable) stretch of DHS’s mandate because congress didn’t limit scope enough in post 9/11 furor while the military *cannot do this legally without declaring martial law* because the founders were very leery of govt using military power like this

I’ve found our local police aren’t great in New England (where they report to individual local town leadership) but not nearly as bad as the county sheriffs where I grew up in FL but I suspect this is more about force size/power than jurisdiction (bigger usually worse).

must pass laws to make hiding police misconduct illegal including “fast exit” deals that include wiping accusations of misconduct.

Defund the police truly is the answer here. Which is not getting rid of police entirely but rather reducing the size, breaking up the hierarchy and localizing the funding and oversight to the most local form of govt available (town, borough, etc). They can coordinate *activities* when needed; also

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a place where the sheriffs weren’t worse than the police

Waiting for the ethicist to discuss how Degussa selling zyklon gas to the nazis was ethical because the problem was with how the purchaser used it (the execs of the company were executed in 1946 for knowingly selling the gas for use on humans)

Every Optimus demo looks like a high school reenactment of a Boston Dynamics demo. The only product that isn’t clearly inferior to competitors is Starlink

My favorite thing is casually mentioning Hoopla to someone, getting them excited about it and thereby convincing them to finally join their local library is the best thing ever (happened with my boss this week!)

Only “interesting” in that she still identifies as a conservative Jew where tattooing breaks a commandment (they literally have to be removed to be buried in a Jewish cemetery).

I’ve never understood why *anyone* likes parades. Even when there’s a very compelling reason to “celebrate in the streets”, it’s mostly dead boring for both participants and watchers. If you want to see cool military stuff in DC, you can go to the air and space museum any time!

Depends on where you live. In New England, schools are very much town by town (mostly funded by property taxes). They were definitely the biggest component of every town I’ve lived in up here. Florida was by county.

In city after city, police are the single biggest budget item.
And I don’t mean like 2% when everything else is 1%. I mean like 40%.
Police take priority over drug treatment, psych care, housing, etc etc etc.
And now we are here.

I’d imagine Simone knows better than just about anyone that giving pervy old men an excuse to demand to check out girl’s private parts is an extremely bad idea.

To the extent resources for LGBTQ kids exist in schools, it’s because before they existed, these kids committed suicide at an alarming rate. These MAGA ghouls are pro-birth but anti-life.

The Jews, Muslims and Christians are *all* children of Abraham (monotheists praying to “the one god”). Muslims also incorporate Jesus. Mohammed is a prophet (not a different god). but even if the dude were praying to a pink jellyfish, the founding documents literally rejected adopting any religion.

I actually agree that we shouldn’t conflate pedophilia with hebephilia because, while both are bad, pedophilia IS worse but YIKES

That was 💯 about personal ambition (vs self respect though she’s clearly lacking that). Her “morals” were completely arbitrary based on public opinion polling and I suspect we’re always amenable to change if she thought it would benefit her personally.

Can’t help but think it’s weird to celebrate another turn in a roller-coaster meme stock that’s still up 60% for the year and still has a market cap 2.5x Ford and 2x Honda even though it’s Q1 revenue was less than half of either and their sales are plummeting, while competitors thrived.

The way they tanked our credit rating did far more damage to our ability to service our debt than how large the actual debt is. There’s an argument to be made that loading up on cheap debt to grow/invest the country was a net positive (until they threw a bunch of bombs at our economy)

I like Bernie but he’s surrounded by some total asshats. Well over 50% of his avid follower base were arrogant misogynist dipshits in 2016 and it hasn’t improved much since. Like dude / if you love Bernie but hate Liz Warren, I don’t know what you are but it’s not a progressive.

I still feel like I’d be totally ok with the DNC spending 100% of its money deploying a huge fleet of taco trucks to give out free tacos.
