The National Guard being mobilized for violence in California is an overreaction. Trump has always been aroused by the Insurrection Act. He wants to use it. It’s his kink.

ICE is going to elementary school graduation ceremonies to abduct people. You don't get lower than that. It not only destroys the day for the families in question, it destroys the experience for all the other people and terrorizes the children.

When the LA police says you are overreaching, you are overreaching.

This moment is why we were so opposed to Pete Hegseth being confirmed.

Particularly pathetic as a fake emergency but that is on brand for this admin

I truly believe part of the reason this is happening in LA right now is because they want to scare us into not protesting for no Kings day. DT is actually worried he’s gonna lose the news cycle so he wants to make sure everyone is too scared. 1/2

Every person on Bluesky should know: * Every post on Bluesky is PUBLIC forever * Every post on Bluesky is archived by ICE, NSA, and many other agencies * Even if you delete a post, it’s already been captured * Judges don’t care if you were “kidding” or being ironic www.404media.co/the-200-site...

“There’s no need here for the Guard. The irritant is the wildly inflammatory raids by militarized ICE …” “The President has a lot of power here for violence & mischief. But he’s not in charge of what ppl think about it, whether they think his actions are legitimate, wise, anything they support.”

Earlier today ICE agents hit someone with a car and tear gassed a neighborhood, sparking several fires and disrupting businesses. Immigrants, by contrast, did not.

It’s provocation. LA didn’t ask for the National Guard. We don’t need it, and won’t be safer because of it. Stay home, everyone.

Reminder that this country had an insurrection on Jan 6 and Trump refused to send in the National Guard.

The statute that President Trump has invoked - 10 U.S.C. § 12406 - has an important proviso: “orders for these purposes shall be issued through the governors of the States" Great article @justsecurity.org explains that proviso in this February 2024 article:

ACLU: “Trump's deployment of federalized National Guard troops in response to protests is unnecessary, inflammatory, and an abuse of power. By taking this action, the Trump administration is… recklessly undermining our foundational democratic principle that the military should not police civilians"

This was their plan. This is what they want. They picked LA on purpose.

Fascists want to provoke violence so they can justify crackdowns and get some good footage to distort for state propaganda outlets

Something about a guy who just pardoned a slew of multi-million dollar swindlers lecturing about law and order just doesn’t land right.

Just to recap, Trump has taken the extraordinary step of federalizing 2000 member of the California National Guard — over the objections of the state’s governor — in response to a protest that currently involves A FEW DOZEN PEOPLE AT A HOME DEPOT

Now Hegseth is saying that the active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton are on alert to come in if the National Guard isn’t enough. The U.S. government is ready to unleash our own military on civilians. It is definitely time to be frightened about what is happening here.

ACLU Statement: "[T]he Trump administration is putting Angelenos in danger, creating legal and ethical jeopardy for troops, and recklessly undermining our foundational democratic principle that the military should not police civilians." "unnecessary, inflammatory, and an abuse of power"

Re-upping this “One First” post from April asking—and trying to answer—five questions about the domestic use of the military:

“A peaceful protest, and this is what we’re greeted with. Where’s our right to protest?” As Governor Newsom says, they want violence and a spectacle. Imagine the reaction if Biden sent thousands of National Guardsmen and Blackhawks to Tennessee against Gov Lee’s wishes.

We @lawfaremedia.org will hopefully publish something on this soon but fwiw the legal authority invoked is NOT the Insurrection Act — it’s 10 USC 12406, which is much more limited than an Insurrection Act invocation. (Reporters: Chris Mirasola is the expert to talk to about this)

President Trump's proclamation hands significant authority to someone who lacks a cool head. Here's Secretary Hegseth's first statement: False statements below and then this: "If violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert."

It should be clear that there was no reason to deploy national guard. It was an objective of theirs looking for an excuse to be unleashed.

The importance of protestors in LA remaining nonviolent could not be more important. Trump is wildly and dangerously overreacting to what has transpired thus far. That must be visible for all Americans to see in what follows.

Absolutely wild that LA has deployed LAPD, DHS has deployed both ICE and CBP, now the white house is calling in the national guard. You'd think the wildest riot in history was going down in LA right now, but it's actually just a bunch of protestors mostly just standing around holding signs.

1/ If accurate, this is almost certainly a conflict with the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of the military for domestic law enforcement, including the National Guard if they are federalized.

only six months in and we're already deploying the national guard on the american people, jesus

Why do people think that "me not being in the street" means "no one is doing anything?" Trump's declared war on judges who are stopping him *right now*

🚨 ALERTA PHILLY 🚨 Hearing from a very credible local source that there may be ICE action tomorrow (Sunday 6/8) in the following areas: 5th and Washington Ave 7th and Snyder Ave 5th and McKean/Wolf Chinatown Let your neighbors know to stay safe and be vigilant. Be ready. Be water.

For the love of god plz SOMEONE in the White House pool report on the legal authority invoked in this memorandum

What's happening tonight is anything but law and order. Don't be deceived.

What happened to states’ rights, Kristi?

ICE terrorizes our communities. People protest, and now Trump is sending 2,000 National Guard troops into Los Angeles. This is how martial law begins in the so-called land of the free.

Tanks being moved into DC. National guard being mobilized in LA. Paramilitary thugs being unleashed across America. It's summer in America and fascism is in full bloom.

The legal authorities for using the Guard like this are a complicated tangle covering different possible uses and scenarios, we don't yet know what this "presidential memorandum" actually says, and it'll probably take into tomorrow at the earliest to get a clearer picture of what's really going on.

Wait…the president of the United States threatening to use the powers of his office to go after a private individual for supporting an opposing political party? That sounds pretty darn authoritarian, pretty darn fascist…in otherwards, pretty darn un-American.👇

Trump and those around him have sought from day one a pretext for unleashing military force against the American people. Today's actions are bad. But things will only get worse from here. The best possible response to it is collective action, stand up to force and document and share everything.

There are two pathways to what Trump is doing: 1) He is federalizing 2000 National Guard troops; or 2) He is deploying 2000 members of another state’s National Guard with the permission of *that* state’s governor. These posts walk through the relevant authorities—and the questions they raise:
