“The acceptance of our present condition is the only form of extremism which discredits us before our children.” -Lorraine Hansberry

Look, I’m in the middle of an archive trip, so I can’t keep up with what seem to be the two busiest and funniest days in a long while on Al Gore’s internet. Can someone just compile a digest version for those of us who are (at least temporarily) not entirely online?

“Americans are always thrown when they discover that everyone in the world is not interested in their version of history which seems to be that Stalinists were responsible for the Civil War in America.” —Lorraine Hansberry, Les Blancs (first draft), 1960

Waiting for Elon to drop another rap…

I can't stress enough how wrong and disingenuous the most recent wave of COVID revisionism is. The *only period* when Democratic counties had higher death rates was April-May 2020. From June 2020 onwards, Republican laxity and denialism were the most powerful force driving deaths.

I wouldn’t be such an AI doomer if it wasn’t constantly being championed by the absolute worst people.

The Art of Absolutely No Deals

"We further estimate that the removal of mandates during this time contributed to 21800 COVID deaths through the rest of 2022, 9% of the U.S. total that year." A reminder that these outcomes are a matter of choice.

BlackfAIce.

Trump 1.0: “It can’t happen here.” Trump 2.0: “It’s happening here, but it’s someone else’s job to stop it. Also, it’s the fault of China and the Left that we aren’t stopping it. Also, maybe we can get white nationalists to help us stop all this white nationalism?”

If I listed all the badasses I went to grad school with, you would think it was some kind of conspiracy of academic labor badassery. But this guy may be the badassest of all. "If I'm not supposed to talk about complicated things, I'm not sure why I signed up to be a faculty member at a university."

This is peak David Brooks, where he manages to correctly identify something that others have been talking about for a decade, but then he can’t fully commit to the implications of it, so he swaps out “blood and soil fascism” for the milquetoast language of “ancestors and homeland nationalism.”

Necropolitics names the power to dictate who may live and who must die.

The erasure of bisexuality has gone too far.

I think I need to stage an intervention with my two year-old about his pine cone problem.

The Trump administration is canceling a nearly $600-million contract to the drugmaker Moderna that was intended to develop a shot for humans against bird flu.
