One of my mentorship fellows @percivalkish.bsky.social pitched their capstone project: Accessibility Dungeons. A ttrpg dungeon crawler where making the dungeon more accessible (via IRL accessible design) is how you escape!

So far I’ve put together the above boarding passes puzzle, a website that requires a password (which he’ll have to crack), and a crossword with certain spaces associated with symbols, so solving the crossword solves a symbol code.
3 more puzzles to go!

This is just one number in a six digit code he’ll need to free his Easter basket from a lock box. (Easter bunny had to hide it from Eddy, the cat).
6 puzzles total, one for each number in the code. Each puzzle has a stamp that corresponds to where it goes in the code.

From Q&A
“Queerness is often villainized but I really like hot queer villains. How do we reconcile that?”
A: People in real life can be evil. Queer people can be good and be evil. Being queer is resistance - if we’re a little evil, who f*cking cares?

Just want to note that it’s 9am and day 3 of GDC and this room is packed. Lots of joy, laughter, and love in the room.

Conclusions:
1 in 5 players are queer and that number will only grow
Queer players are not a monolith - and many of their experiences haven’t been represented
Support queer developers!!

Malik from validate - coming to terms with shame around bisexuality and living his authentic self.
Cynte and Karis from Endoparasitic 2
- explore queerness outside of romance, exes where both are a little evil

Patricia from Skate and Date
- being a lesbian is more than “I’m in a relationship”. It’s about being in community with people. It’s about all the relationships, not just romantic.
Being able to see a non-binary character be main characters meant a lot

Iskandar from Spirit Swap
- exploring who you are, balancing who you were with who you are now.
Alice from Hello Cruel World
- Her transition is explained but the story does not exist without that transition. Transition is essential to the gameplay and story.

Anevia Tirabade from Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous.
Emhari Abdi from Validate. A trans woman and a lesbian balancing having a kid, missing there’s wife, and discovering their real problem is being a Virgo 🤣

Panelists favorite representations:
Andile from Thirsty Suitors as example of non-binary character whose family was not accepting.
Isabeau from In Stars and Time as trans representation, being comfortable with self as they are.

“We saw a lot of Dragon Age”
Over 1/3 didn’t feel represented.

Even though a majority of participants had a fave queer character, most couldn’t name a comment where they felt represented outside of romance

A survey!!
1) surveys many queer players as possible
2) examine implicit and explicit representation
3) look at more modern representations.
Surveys = 14 questions, N = 249, 83% were queer players

Also, dot grid paper in a Moleskine sketchbook is the way.

I was lucky enough to have @totter87.bsky.social as a game design prof. I remember being assigned the sketchbook work. It felt super overwhelming as a non-artist amongst amazing artists, but it definitely grew on me and to this day I still sketch ideas/processes and have a hoard of sketchbooks.

Important - it’s not about drawing but rather getting ideas down quickly without worrying too much about perfection.

As an educator, assigned the use of the sketchbook as homework to make them a habit for students.

Sketchbook = way to both analyze existing content and plan out your own.
