Coincidentally, I read an essay on the decline in reading/writing comprehension scores within the "Whole Language" cohort.

Looking back, we talk about how pop culture moved the needle on the gains (sudden and/or incremental) that we've seen - PHILADELPHIA, ROOTS, WILL & GRACE, etc.. do you think mass entertainment actually had that effect, or are we retroactively patting ourselves on the back for "progress"?

It's gatekeeping for class, not skill.

Itās like.. not even a mild take at this point.
..but listening to āsmart peopleā discussing him as heās being yeeted out of government, you hear nothing but lauding and fawning for his āgenius engineeringā

Maybe if you keep saying it, somehow it will magically happen and make us all rich!

SOA always felt like a response to the plummeting cost of networking and the rise of cloud computing compared to the cost of employees.. also my theory of javascript, graphql, etc š

Somewhere there's a mythical spreadsheet that balances the costs of servers, networking, employees, etc that will tell us what the right architecture is at any given moment.

There's a ton of them being floated around and discussed.. they just don't fit on a bumper sticker.

We should bundle all these bubbles together and sell tranches of them. What could go wrong?

I would submerge them in water and measure the overflow.

Iām hesitant to characterize the intent of āSeattleā as a whole, given the sad turnout of that election.

And again, sorry to over-engage with my hyper-speciality. I completely get where youāre coming from and what youāre saying! Itās just hard to compare the risk profiles for a āmiddle-aged lady with 250k miles riding experience and trainingā to ā23yo dude on a gixxer doing wheelies in flip-flopsā

No, I get that.. I donāt mean youāre wrong or lying or anything like that, just that.. motorcycles arenāt ādangerousā per se, theyāre just different stakes, and the statistical differences due to age/gender, training, gear are really wildly meaningful.

I donāt disagree, I just think the numbers are misleading. The simple process of going through licensing (as legally you should, but many people donāt..) cuts the incident rate by multiple orders of magnitude.

The entire āwealthy donorsā aspect of this story is what keeps hitting me. Why isnāt it a bigger story in this town that our mayor is basically only working for the interests of them, instead of the city as a whole?

But seriously, my BMW R1250 engine meets EURO6 environmental standards for cars. The environmental regulations on bikes (metric bikes, at least) are _stricter_ than for cars.

I'm gonna call out some nuance here, even though you ain't asked for it. Motorcycle fatalities need to be examined by age and gender demographics, along with licensing, helmet usage, and experience.
(Sorry.. I'm really sorry.. I'm a motorcycle safety instructor..)

"play" is such a critical part of learning anything.. I don't really do makeup anymore, but having the space to PLAY with it when I was younger was so important to my sense of comfort with it; I can't imagine the stress of having to "get it right" immediately.
