Or they're scam/crime victims!

In several respects, Frankfurt’s [1986 On Bullshit] essay neatly describes the output of AI-enabled large language models. They are not concerned with truth because they have no conception of it. They operate by statistical correlation not empirical observation.

I interacted with John a bit over the past decade or so, though I can't claim to have known him well. He was principled and ornery. Hard to wrap my head around the fact that he was in his 80s and late 70s for all of that.

NEW from me: #SkinnyTok influencer Liv Schmidt is making an est. $100k a month from the Skinni Societe, a group of girls encouraging each other to starve themselves. I joined the group and found at least 15 members who are still in high school. Here’s what else I saw: www.thecut.com/article/infl...

I think this is the best unsolicited email tip I've ever gotten. Pulitzer here I come.

"A majority of people at the event, this person said, did not have an opportunity to speak with or take a photo with Trump, who promptly left at the conclusion of his remarks."

I am also verified now, but unlike Brandy I don't post about it.

New: The crypto folks who bought the President's memecoin in order to attend his elite dinner tomorrow spent over $1 million each on average, and nearly $400 million in total. Per @molly.wiki, nearly 3/4 appear to be foreign nationals who'd be legally barred from donating cash to candidate Trump.

It's notable that none of the solid reporters who cover Musk — there are a decent number of them! — have bitten on this repeated claim. I certainly won't buy it until they do.

My father was a Nazi hunter, until he was killed in the Lockerbie bombing, when I was four. Now, a man will stand trial for the crime. What does it mean, after nearly forty years, to seek justice for the crimes of history? My new cover story for the Times Magazine: www.nytimes.com/2025/05/20/m...

New: UAE is trying to recruit Pentagon workers displaced by DOGE to move to Abu Dhabi to work on AI for UAE military. A UAE brigadier general met last month with two former staffers of Defense Digital Service who have worked on US classified projects and tried to recruit them and the entire DDS team

I left my job at ProPublica about a month ago. Here's why: I've teamed up with @mantzarlis.com to launch indicator.media, a new publication dedicated to exposing digital deception and to equipping professionals and the public with knowledge and skills to investigate it. Sign up for free below!

I've given it a lot of thought and decided to move Andy to near the bottom of the list of the journalists I'm most likely to pick a fight with.

I wonder if this new technology will be abused by the worst people in existence

I know of several people in news who bet on Journalism the first time when it lost and none when it won, and I think that might be the metaphor here.

Every time I see a picture of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and even when I've seen him in person, my first two thoughts are: Oh hey, that guy from The Americans. I liked that show.

Really good scoop from @almsnatalie.bsky.social. Solid addition to the news genre of "we all assumed this would be the case but did not have clear evidence until now."

FBI warning of AI-generated SMS and MMS scams impersonating current federal officials. Anybody seen this/have an idea what it's about? www.ic3.gov/PSA/2025/PSA...

why the fuck is this palm scanner at my doctor

"A Russian national has been arrested and charged for allegedly attempting to smuggle clawed frog embryos and embryonic samples into the United States." Don't know what to do with this.

NBC News Digital is looking for a senior tech reporter, someone who is deeply sourced and an impeccable writer who can focus on the industry’s leading companies, CEOs, products and their impact on society. Would include launching a weekly newsletter. Apply: jobs.smartrecruiters.com/NBCUniversal...

NEW from me: Bill Belichick went to support his GF Jordon Hudson at the Miss Maine USA pageant because after the disastrous CBS News interview it would have "looked worse" if he didn't go, a source familiar with their relationship says. (She placed third.) www.thecut.com/article/jord...

New this morn: A fraud ring has settled on a reliable target: Stealing the identities of Texas death row inmates:

Oh hey, turns out ransomware and wanna-be ransomware dudes are lying bastards. Who knew 🤷? via @kevincollier.bsky.social and picked up from @zackwhittaker.com’s amazing newsletter.

Poland says Russian secret service behind 2024 fire in Warsaw shopping centre reut.rs/43oOeWN

In the past few months, President Trump’s Justice Department has dropped a case against Elon Musk’s SpaceX and the Labor Department has canceled a planned civil rights review of Tesla.

I realize I’m just shouting into the wind here, but: please, please, please stop posting screenshots without links, or summarizing breaking news events without links. There’s a serious problem with unsourced assertions all over the world right now, don’t be part of the problem.

The Privacy & Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) released a report on the TSA's use of face recognition at airports. Just in name of staff bc after the agency launched the project, Trump fired all its D-selected members so that it now lacks quorum to act. documents.pclob.gov/prod/Documen...

The new pope signed up for Twitter in 2011 with a Hotmail email address that he also used for a lot of other stuff, which is how I know that he's probably the first pope on Zynga and almost certainly the first pope on Tumblr

First scandal of the new papacy better not be that he reuses the same generic password everywhere

Chicago pope American cyrbe angle

If you’re curious about Trump’s new surgeon general nominee Casey Means, I wrote about her for @nymag.com. She didn’t finish her residency in med school, which is cool! Also very cool she thinks hormonal birth control is a “disrespect of life” www.thecut.com/article/case...
