My dream, which will never be realized, is for Microsoft/ Crowdstrike/Google/Recorded Future etc to say "Hey this is China's MSS" when they know it's China's MSS. When they have high confidence unit 123, they'll say that. If they're just confident it's China they'll say "hey it's China."

Happy to report that I’m back in journalism: Today is my first day as @bloomberg.com's cybersecurity reporter in Washington, DC. Please reach out and say hi, especially if we haven't spoken in a while.

"A succession of top agents, all women, were given an ultimatum: Take a different post or be asked to retire." www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/u...

Ukraine’s forces launched a massive drone attack on airfields deep inside Russia that were home to strategic bombers used in air raids, in possibly their most audacious attack of the war. “More than 40 aircraft have been hit,” an official told @financialtimes.com. www.ft.com/content/16f3...

Details are: Somebody's been texting and calling gov officials pretending to be Wiles Foreign intelligence not suspected Texts didn't sound like her or come from her number Maybe somebody used AI or "hacked" something? (This is meaningless speculation rn) Not sure what here would even be illegal.

New: Australia became on Friday the first country in the world to require victims of ransomware attacks to declare to the government any extortion payments made on their behalf to cybercriminals.

It used to be that surveillance tech would be developed for the military and eventually be used against consumers Now, tech developed for consumers is being adopted by the military Says something about consumer tech

For those interested, this is the photo that accompanied today's press release that Meta and Andruil are partnering to make "mixed reality capabilities to national security missions."

Or they're scam/crime victims!

In several respects, Frankfurt’s [1986 On Bullshit] essay neatly describes the output of AI-enabled large language models. They are not concerned with truth because they have no conception of it. They operate by statistical correlation not empirical observation.

I interacted with John a bit over the past decade or so, though I can't claim to have known him well. He was principled and ornery. Hard to wrap my head around the fact that he was in his 80s and late 70s for all of that.

NEW from me: #SkinnyTok influencer Liv Schmidt is making an est. $100k a month from the Skinni Societe, a group of girls encouraging each other to starve themselves. I joined the group and found at least 15 members who are still in high school. Here’s what else I saw: www.thecut.com/article/infl...

I think this is the best unsolicited email tip I've ever gotten. Pulitzer here I come.

"A majority of people at the event, this person said, did not have an opportunity to speak with or take a photo with Trump, who promptly left at the conclusion of his remarks."

I am also verified now, but unlike Brandy I don't post about it.

New: The crypto folks who bought the President's memecoin in order to attend his elite dinner tomorrow spent over $1 million each on average, and nearly $400 million in total. Per @molly.wiki, nearly 3/4 appear to be foreign nationals who'd be legally barred from donating cash to candidate Trump.

It's notable that none of the solid reporters who cover Musk — there are a decent number of them! — have bitten on this repeated claim. I certainly won't buy it until they do.

My father was a Nazi hunter, until he was killed in the Lockerbie bombing, when I was four. Now, a man will stand trial for the crime. What does it mean, after nearly forty years, to seek justice for the crimes of history? My new cover story for the Times Magazine: www.nytimes.com/2025/05/20/m...

New: UAE is trying to recruit Pentagon workers displaced by DOGE to move to Abu Dhabi to work on AI for UAE military. A UAE brigadier general met last month with two former staffers of Defense Digital Service who have worked on US classified projects and tried to recruit them and the entire DDS team

I left my job at ProPublica about a month ago. Here's why: I've teamed up with @mantzarlis.com to launch indicator.media, a new publication dedicated to exposing digital deception and to equipping professionals and the public with knowledge and skills to investigate it. Sign up for free below!

I've given it a lot of thought and decided to move Andy to near the bottom of the list of the journalists I'm most likely to pick a fight with.

I wonder if this new technology will be abused by the worst people in existence

I know of several people in news who bet on Journalism the first time when it lost and none when it won, and I think that might be the metaphor here.

Every time I see a picture of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and even when I've seen him in person, my first two thoughts are: Oh hey, that guy from The Americans. I liked that show.

Really good scoop from @almsnatalie.bsky.social. Solid addition to the news genre of "we all assumed this would be the case but did not have clear evidence until now."

FBI warning of AI-generated SMS and MMS scams impersonating current federal officials. Anybody seen this/have an idea what it's about? www.ic3.gov/PSA/2025/PSA...

why the fuck is this palm scanner at my doctor

"A Russian national has been arrested and charged for allegedly attempting to smuggle clawed frog embryos and embryonic samples into the United States." Don't know what to do with this.
