We need a leftist podcaster [reading notes] who's a dumb asshole

“You campaigned on lowering the price of groceries. How can you justify cutting food assistance in this [budget] bill?” a reporter asked the president. His response didn’t make any sense.

The basic American political reality is that blue states subsidize red states. The Trump variation is to keep collecting ever more taxes from blue states while taking away ever more services from red states. This is a gamble that voters like to suffer, or no longer matter. time.com/7286199/trum...

Pediatricians say that childhood vaccines are safe. A heroin-addled nepo baby with a brain worm says they may not be. For busy voters, it can be hard to know who to believe.

I got to hear the incredible @mashagessen.bsky.social speak today and ask them what American media can learn from Russia. “Thinking that you can give a little once in a while—that never works. You give any autocrat an inch, they'll take a mile. So resist while you have more resources to resist.”

I was sitting next to this woman — if you look carefully, you can see my left ear turning red from embarrassment

Fascism creates problems for which it claims to have the only solution, but then, as always, it lies.

Meanwhile, the Canadians are gonna start celebrating the War of 1812 every August 24th…. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/u...

What evidence is there that these are actually ICE officers and not some Freikorps militia vigilantes? Why on earth did the Albemarle County bailiffs allow these men to take custody of someone without showing badges or a warrant?

fewer interviews with faux regretful trump supporters, more interviews with harris voters who knew they were fucking right

Yo, here’s the thing. Federal employees are, by and large, rewarded for keeping their heads down and doing the work and not taking credit for anything. It’s not about us. It’s about the people we serve in our work. That’s literally what taxpayers fund our salaries for. This does not help us.

I kinda wonder whether the whole point of this exercise was to make a show of force to the elites who take Amtrak to Glacier National Park. How many illegal immigrants did they expect to find on a train that has an observation car?

Do these people not realize that you can talk about brutal immigrant detention AND tariffs? There's no mysterious rule under which you're only allowed to talk about one thing.

Bring back *everyone* who was sent from the U.S. to CECOT in El Salvador. *No one* should be sent there. ALL their rights were violated. ALL of them should come home.

Share this everywhere. I believe there should be immigration enforcement. I believe there shld be an immigration enforcement agency. But this one is simply lawless to the core. That fact is just inescapable.

Adolf Eichmann was, infamously, responsible for organizing the logistics of the trains shipping people to the camps. In this LinkedIn post I will

I really think that when this is all over, we will need to come to a reckoning with how and why social media and cable news have created conditions by which democracy has become a suicide pact with morons

As the author of a history of concentration camps, I would like to emphasize that this is a very bad idea, and we should definitely not do it.

From Justice Jackson’s dissent to today’s ruling: “[M]ake no mistake: We are just as wrong now as we have been in the past, with similarly devastating consequences. It just seems we are now less willing to face it.”

It’s time to take the keys away from grandpa. Congress must act to restore its power of the purse, including un-delegating the power to set tariff rates. GOP congressmen and senators need to do their flippin’ jobs before any more damage is done to our liberties and the common welfare

Great turnout at the NYC #handsoff

Stand with us, or fall against us. Flippers up.

I suspect a lot of the DOGE and Project 2025 guys read Neal Stephenson’s “Snowcrash,” which takes place in a libertarian dystopia in which the U.S. economy has been reduced to “music, movies, microcode (software), and high-speed pizza delivery.” They just misread the book as utopian.

I have tariffed the penguins that are on Heard Island and which you were probably assuming did not export goods forgive me they were taking advantage of us so cunning and so cold

Musk ‘Stepping Back’? Don’t Bet on It. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/musk-...

They’d probably secure their communication channels, not relying on commercial apps

If we were conquered and under hostile occupation, what would the government do differently? Would an occupation government that wanted to crush the United States as a vibrant, prosperous country with influence around the world do anything differently?

A constitutional theory point about this, implicit in Evan's post.... making major changes take time, coalition-building, deliberation, and reaffimation is the design of the system.

On the one hand, so far as I know, we have no indication that there is any targeting of scientists publishing academic work about evolution. On the other hand, is it wildly paranoid to think there might at some point be targeting? I am also not aware of anything that would prevent it from happening!

As Bluesky has grown, I've seen a lot of backsliding on alt text. Please try to be considerate to others and include alt text with all of your images. It helps everyone. Indeed, in the "accessibility" setting in Bluesky you can set it to make sure you add alt text, which is a useful thing to do.

Now taking nominations for the most 🧑‍🍳💋 book they could censor from the USNA library. Mine is _Catch-22_

Insightful re: the relative power of Vance and Miller

I have often thought this, but I always end up concluding that it would only work if the language included lots of bigotry and promises to punish the weak, big league

From the NYT “why is Trump popular with conservatives” round table. One thing I can’t help but notice is that Cruz, Hawley, Cotton, and Stefanik are, in addition to being conservatives, all assholes. It may be that they resent universities because they were treated as such at freshman orientation

We're watching an incredibly rapid state collapse--faster than pretty much any except those involving tanks in the streets--in real time. I say this as a person who's been in places with tanks in the streets. And as one who reads enough to know that the first lie of fascism is inevitability.

By failing to competently lead the DOJ to victory in this case, AG Bondi let terrorists slip through her fingers, supporting them
