Well yes, because a bribe is a 'routine transaction' in Qatari culture. Wasta and gift giving are common business there and the ruling family does what they want.

Can you write one thing, ANY thing of value anymore? Just stop being complicit and awful.

This is a song of angry men, it is Washington at Valley Forge, it is Churchill and never surrender. It's here and it's now. There is an evil at the heart of the galaxy that deports child citizens with cancer. That funds the starvation and dehumanization of an entire peoples (too many to name).

"There is a wound that won't heal at the center of the galaxy. There is a darkness reaching like rust into everything around us. We let it grow, and now it's here. It's here and it's not visiting anymore. It wants to stay." This isn't theater. This is a call to action. This is meant for us.

And now as she says 'there is a darkness at the center of the galaxy'. It is hard not to see D.C. as the center of the galaxy, because it is. Russia has a smaller GDP than California. China is strong but based on propping up the yen and burning through natural resources.

But now it is here. And as Maarva says 'it is here and it is not just visiting anymore'. It arrests judges, it questions former FBI directors for insta posts. It enriches itself while starving not just the chess pieces, but everyone who isn't it. It controls the media, the narrative.

So we made the pieces of the death star. Missles, plane engines, small electronics, guns. We thrived. But the Empire was growing. Every time we were attacked, the Empire reacted predictably. Loss of freedoms, loss of rights, more institutional violence. Still we slept.

But in the 50s, we started developing our own death stars. Nuclear and political. Entire regions became chess pieces, Entire nations became pawns to be sacrificed. Korea, Chile, Vietnam, El Salvador, Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan and more. and most Americans slept on it. 'Empire' was elsewhere.

Europe ended the war with losses of territories, conical empires, and of course millions of young men and women. The US lost comparatively little in people, and gained entry to the world. Europe became small, US became an empire. For a generation we used that empire for good.

It's direct, gutteral, emotional and prescient. I am sure that Tony Gilroy and the writers intended every last feeling you feel, every connection you make. And it should make you feel that way. The USA had been an empire for a long time. In reality, we were the only winners of WW I. /2

Agreed, this is the accelerated continuation of plans that started in the 70s. Erosion of workers rights. Demonization of 'entitlements', glorification of obscene wealth, pitting Americans against each other. Killing fairness doctrine, removing oversight. 'Right to work' bullshit.

Fuck her and her criminal enterprise. I have no doubt if you gave her a plane she would start throwing undesirable out of it like the Argentine Junta wannabe she is.

Man, every time I think NYT has hit rock bottom, it finds new and inexplicable ways to show me how fucking bad it is at basic journalism. I mean, just awful. Like 'must be intentional' awful. Like Pravda awful. A 400m jet cannot be given with 'no strings attached'. YOU. FUCKING. QUISLING.

A fucking space opera full of robots and beasties speaks more to our current situation — and what it’s putting EVERYONE through — better than a thousand think pieces or op-eds.
