Change in overall provincial government spending vs. total provincial government spending on post-secondary education, Canada, 2006-07 to 2025-26 (2006-07 = 100). It's not austerity, it's the choices.

I was surprised how much I learned about myself when I did this interview for @cdnsciencepub.com @cjfas.bsky.social when I became an Editor-in-Chief. Link here: blog.cdnsciencepub.com/it-takes-a-c...

Today @maryeb.bsky.social launches our project marking the 25th anniversary of the Walkerton Water Crisis with excerpts from Joy Parr's “Local Water Diversely Known: The E. Coli Contamination in Walkerton 2000 and After” essay. niche-canada.org/2025/05/15/l... #envhist #cdnhist #water #ontario

The PLANTS program (funded by NSF) at @botsocamerica.bsky.social was a cornerstone of the conference each year, bringing together new-to-science scholars with more experienced mentors. It helped provide community, support, and connection to new scientists. The grant was terminated last week.

If you’re already being attacked. If everyone is losing funding anyways. If the threats to our students are this severe. Then we need to speak out — about our research and about the current threats and the consequences. The public generally trusts scientists. We need to talk with the people.

“I just don’t know [that] there’s a lot of wisdom in keeping our heads down anymore,” says @katestarbird.bsky.social, who has been outspoken for years. “I never had the option of keeping my head down.”

Dead fish sightings in Lake Ontario have raised concerns, but Ontario Tech aquatic ecology expert @kirkwoodlab.bsky.social says there's no need to sound the alarm just yet.

Dear fellow olds - recognize that the term 'next generation sequencing' is confusing to those that never had experience with the first generation. Also - what 'generation' are we on anyways?

Last year we posted a field safety checklist for folks in ecology and evolution: brianomeara.info/posts/fields... . Feel free to reuse, remix, etc. in ways you find helpful There is also good info at www.fieldworkinitiative.org www.ehs.ucsb.edu/programs-ser... senr.osu.edu/diversity/sa...

we picked a helluva time to *continue* to devalue effective science communication

To see why destroying the US science enterprise is so detrimental to the world, we have to realize that the US spends more on research and development than any other country in the world (by far), and if we remove China and Japan, the US spends almost as much as ALL other countries combined.

“How might the narrative about senior women be challenged or changed in order to respect these women who have achieved enough success to earn promotion? How do we stop this generational cycle so that women's wings aren't clipped as soon as they approach the power to soar.”

If you've ever been to SW BC or Vancouver Island, you'll know $15k is a drop in the bucket. Blackberry plants spread rapidly, crowd out native plants, and make impenetrable barriers for many native animals. While everyone loves the berries, this plant is an ecological disaster. 🌎

Scientists who study climate don't automatically attribute all changes to human activity. Rather, we carefully investigate every possible natural factor that could explain the planet's warming. Could these be the real culprits? The evidence is in--and the answer is NO. This thread explains! 🧵

This @inaturalist.bsky.social blog post highlights a big issue typical of Canadian 🇨🇦 biodiversity research. "Over half of iNaturalist observations are found in 1% of the landmass of Canada." Check out the map at the 🔗 – maybe you can fill some gaps? 🧪 🌎 www.inaturalist.org/blog/110352-...

with Canada breathing a collective sigh of relief today. Its a good day to be a woman and "woke" scientist!

Really interesting analysis on how to make sure your papers are highly cited - www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... tl;dr: "include broad titles, use motivational language, use conceptual images, and included clear explanations of the broader context and relevance of their research"

What many students don’t understand is humanities profs don’t assign writing to get the product. We are extending invitations to know yourself. If you conjure AI, it doesn’t impact us. You cheat only yourself. And knowing yourself today is the best defense you’ve got against fascism.

Now would be a good time to renew your donations to the @wikimediafoundation.org

Oh FFS, that company did not "bring back the dire wolf". And furthermore... We must stop and reverse biodiversity loss *of >1 million existing species*, not go on a PR-driven wild goose chase to bring back a few extinct ones. #DireWolf #Deextinction www.newscientist.com/article/2475...
