Seattle-based scientist studying the molecular biology of hemostasis, also I take photos and run marathons. Not vengeful but can hold a grudge. All opinions are my own, etc.

The REDCap Revolution: How a Clinical Data Management Tool Empowered Global Research Communities www.the-scientist.com/the-redcap-r... #redcap #bioinformatics #datascience

Huge news today: Big Balls Out. Also, Big Balls Out.

Journalists keep asking me, baffled, “What’s the Trump administration really trying to do to the science agencies?” So I say “They are trying to destroy them. Cut off their funding, ruin their facilities, harass their staff into leaving.” It’s not reform, and it never was. It’s destruction.

I know #ISTH2025 is nearly over, but, if you need a snack, the chilled cucumber soup with crab at Petite Cerise f’in slaps. 🦀 🤤

I’m intrigued by Arijit Biswas’s proposed model of the FVIII B domain as a flexible glycosylated coating on FVIII. Think cotton candy, not a hard shell. His data suggests the unstructured nature of the B domain could function as a soft barrier, fine tuning hemostasis. #ISTH2025 @isth.org #hemesky

Side note, but Andrew Cuomo probably wouldn't have been HUD secretary if Seattle Mayor Norm Rice hadn't gotten caught up in a scandal about how Pacific Place mall was funded.

Very interesting oral communication about comparison of an Al-Based App 🤳🩸(MEASUREmenses ™) and #PBAC for Evaluating Menstrual Bleeding. ➡️ Need to be validated on differents type of pads. #ISTH2025 #AUB #HMB @isth.org

There is more to established #thrombophilia defects in understanding the genetics of venous thromboembolism #VTE. Plenary lecture by Prof Pierre Morange #ISTH2025

Biology resists simplicity #ISTH2025 plenary session

🩸 Important findings from Dr @IMYanXu at #ISTH2025: Black individuals on extended anticoagulation for secondary VTE prevention had higher rates of major bleeding, including ICH, than White individuals. 🔎 No difference in CRNMB. 📢 Calls for action to address racial disparities.

Anette Arbjerg Højen, RN, MscN, PHD; Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark, gave an excellent talk at #ISTH2025 on how clinicians are blind to long-term sequelae suffered by patients after VTE (post-thrombotic and post-PE syndromes). The first slide summarises things.

No mother should die in childbirth but some women are more likely to. Rates of postpartum hemorrhage and maternal death are much higher in Black women. And race is a social construct so this is not biological. Racism (systemic) is the risk factor. #ISTH2025

In the US, the maternal death rate is 121.8 per 100,000 Black women compared to 24.1 per 100,000 non Black women. Race has no biological basis and this is UNACCEPTABLE. We must do better. #ISTH2025 #womenshealth

Brilliant visualization of extravascular FIX and very interesting (and surprising) differences in specific activity of extravascular FIX and FX in different tissues. 🤯 #ISTH2025 #hemesky

Huh, they finally built the FEMA detention centers they kept accusing us of building.

Pro tip: this is the best place in the entire Washington Convention Center if you need a quiet moment. (Shhhh don’t blow up my spot) #isth2025

The ASH special panel urged that future ASH guidelines address sickle cell disease management tailored to carceral settings to reduce morbidity and ensure equitable care. buff.ly/UF3sRWF #hemesky

Doesn’t appear to be on sale outside of Amazon, but I’m happy to pay full price!

It’s too damn hot outside so I’m going to sit here and post about my Monday at #isth2025 (🧵) @isth.org #hemesky 🩸 🧬

State-of-the-Art talk bij de Luuk Scheres Despite hormone use being the most prevalent and important risk factor for #VTE in women <50, there is huge underrepresentation of risk models and funding. Food for thought and action 💪🏼 #ISTH2025

Sending a discreet amen from the back of the ballroom for highlighting the complexity of ABO typing and understanding its role in hemostasis in today’s #ISTH2025 plenary. (I would argue, however, that A1 and A2 aren’t serologically identical.) #hemesky @isth.org #genesky

Looking forward to my #ISTH2025 oral presentation on long-term mortality and causes of death after VTE in the ARIC study. @isth.org

Interesting data on influence of race from the RIETE registry. After correction for treatment etc, these differences did not show in multi-variate analysis. #ISTH2025

Timon discussed how ADAMTS13 interacts with macrophage scavenger receptors #ISTH2025 @rcsi.bsky.social @jsodonnell.bsky.social

Potential emerging signal difference in ADAs in next-generation FVIII(a)-mimetics. 0/61 for Mim8 but 2/30 for NXT007. Surveillance may not be the same. #ISTH2025 #hemophilia #hemesky

This is what we were waiting for. A direct comparison between apixaban and rivaroxaban for the treatment of acute VTE. Apixaban reduces bleeding risk in the first 3 months by >50%! Practice changing investigator-initiated RCT. #ISTH2025

The legendary USGS Bee Lab is being shut down. The 2026 budget proposal defunds the Ecosystem Mission Area, which supported the lab. If their science helped your work, there’s still time to make your voice heard. Read below. (1/4) 🧪 #pollinators #Pollinators #USGS #Entomology #Hymenoptera 🪲🪳

irony of course is that what these people are demanding are explicit racial preferences and quotas for themselves
