"AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt." A bit scary, but somehow not quite a surprise. From Alex Vacca @itsalexvacca on Twitter, here unrolled for the convenience of those who don't. threadreaderapp.com/thread/19353...

Jesse Singal is cited 3 times in the amicus briefing for the decision to allow states to ban youth gender-affirming care www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/23...

New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays. Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn. arxiv.org/pdf/2506.088...

Useful study. But imagine if the these same insights, generated by gaggles of humanities scholars & educators in recent years, were taken half as seriously as Brain Data™️. One might even argue that the systematic devaluation of such knowledge has created the cultural conditions for AI’s adoption 🤔

This is a vital message: one of the larger reasons BlueSky is refreshingly free of alt-right shitlords is because in the early days we made a gentleperson’s agreement to starve these fuckos out and it worked. No likes, no quotes, no engagement. They got bored and left. Please keep the Old Ways.

My man Jay did the deep dive into ACB’s absolutely fucked up concurrence in the anti-trans case https://ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/skrmetti-barrett-concurrence-supreme-court-opinion-recap/

Keep in mind public land is land owned BY YOU, the taxpayer. Republicans want to sell it off so they can pay for their tax cuts for billionaires and corporations.

Today's complaint about the AI in education discourse: Too much of it is framed around a future that is going to happen to us, as opposed to seeing the future as something we may have some agency to shape. I reject the deterministic view of AI, particularly genAI. It's a tool, not our master.

I know a staggering number of people who now no longer have careers that were directly focused on *helping people survive disasters and war*. Vast swaths of my network have had their essential global work callously vaporized by Musk and Trump. (Unfortunately, my career also has been lit on fire).

One of the basic things women are always taught to do for safety is not to be alone. Walk home with a friend, text a friend where you are so they know. Yet our politicians are determined to deny sex workers that basic safety and security measure, to criminalise any friend who tries to help them.

Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

BREAKING: A federal judge ruled all transgender and intersex people can obtain passports that align with their gender identity while the case against President Trump's executive order proceeds. While this is good news, we will continue fighting until this executive order is blocked permanently.

So...how long until the UN has to look elsewhere for relocation? This is a sincere question.

UPDATE — Here are the 13* members of Congress who have so far signed on to efforts against the Trump-Vance admin's moves towards war on Iran *Missed Welch initially Outreach for these resolutions still going on inside Congress, watch for numbers to possibly change tomorrow

Stephen Miller is running everything. And the man is an order of magnitude crazier than Trump.

NEW: Trump admin continues its destructive path, but district judges keep pushing back. Chief Justice Roberts might not be clear on when to “check the excesses" of Trump's presidency, but two very different district court judges on Monday showed how to act. Tonight, at Law Dork —>

#ICYMI: We've added 23 staffers to our DOGE tracker, taking the total to 109. We also revealed the makeup of the DOGE team at the Defense Department, a group made up primarily of tech startup founders.

If the United States is preparing to join a direct attack on Tehran, that is madness. If we aren’t, publicly signalling that we are likely to is also madness.

Mr. Antiwar President has us inches away from a Civil War at home and a nuclear war abroad in defense of an ally that is starting random hot regional wars to detract from its ongoing genocide. I’m sure all of this will just naturally cool off.

In 2016 MN Police killed a Black man named Philando Castile despite him disclosing he had a legal firearm. Yesterday MN Police released a white woman named Jenny Boelter despite her car full of cash, firearms, & passports hours after her husband mass murdered people & was on the run from police.

I don't know who needs to hear this but a cat book from 1902 was recently uploaded to Gutenberg: gutenberg.org/cache/epub/7...

Senator Mike Lee pretended he was on the phone to avoid being confronted by @smith.senate.gov after he mocked assassination victims this weekend. She made sure he heard what she had to say.

Reversing the reversal. A cruel circus. 🎪 apple.news/ARnsEcMRtRRO...

“If we do not stand up to Peter Thiel, they’re going to come after all of us.” 13 people were arrested protesting Palantir’s surveillance of Americans. Palantir is profiting off of ICE raids. It’s refining its tracking techniques & gathering data at lightning speed. @moreperfectunion.bsky.social

The President does not have the authority to make this decision. There is no imminent threat to America from Iran. He cannot take this action without congressional authorization. I will not vote to give him that authority, and I likely represent the majority of Congress.

We’re announcing new legislation — the No Secret Police Act (SB 627) — to ban local/state/federal law enforcement, w/ some exceptions, from covering their faces when interacting w/ the public & require them to wear identifying info. The secret police behavior we’re seeing destroys trust & must end🧵

Among Democrats - "Do you support Democrats like Sanders and AOC who call for a more aggressive stance towards Trump, or moderate Democrats who are willing to compromise with Trump issues important to their base?" AOC/Bernie: 70% Moderate Dems: 30% Harvard-Harris / June 12, 2025

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

Beyond devastating. The cruelty and idiocy of this ban is mind-numbing. So many brave men and women, serving their country honorably in uniform, purged from the ranks because of the president's vile, unvarnished bigotry. My heart breaks. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/u...

Early childhood education is a labor issue: Pay for providers is low, & burnout is high. We need early educators desperately so that families can work. AND we will never be able to achieve necessary expansions of childcare w/out ensuring the workforce gets the pay & working conditions they deserve.

Another story in the Guardian that should have been in an American paper …. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

In a time of tyranny Be ungovernable.

Now that's teamwork

A reminder that automatic license plate readers enable far-reaching state surveillance of vulnerable people, even in left-leaning cities like mine. The Evanston Police Department operates 18 Flock ALPRs.

New euphemism for authoritarian lawlessness just dropped

Art-Science-Tech folks (not me, to be clear) don’t have it easy. For anyone to notice the work these days requires like, a PhD in chemistry, access to the Hadron Collider, a team of engineer assistants and the result has to be a talking plant. The reward is $500 and an unpaid invite to a conference

I mean, one hopes, but I keep thinking of that exchange from the final episode of Firefly: “You like to hurt folk.” “It's part of the job.” “It's why you took the job.”
