www.nytimes.com/2025/01/17/o... (1/3) "And I don’t think there was anywhere near the level of disgust and concern and feeling that we were being corroded in our souls as there is now. And I think that, at some point, you are going to see a candidate come up who is going to weaponize this feeling...

Final installment (of my 10-article series on AllSides) ! I tried to put it into context given the re-election of Donald Trump and his newly appointed FCC head, Brendan Carr. Short version: Carr has some strange ideas, motivated by what he thinks Trump wants. www.allsides.com/blog/who-wil...

I wrote about a fundamental problem with algorithmic social media—that it was developed by misfits and cynics to diminish the value of interpersonal cohesion—and how conservative have exploited it to finally build the noxious, dominant counterculture they always wanted.

I've been warning journalists on what may be coming. There is no 1st Amendment defense under #EspionageAct nor reporter's privilege. Only thing that has stopped media prosecutions during last century has been policy. That is about to be thrown out. @wbaidlaw.bsky.social can help advise media.

Incoming FCC chair Brendan Carr says he'll focus on the journalism at CBS News as part of review of Paramount/Skydance deal. Misguided/ideological view of public interest that doesn't lower skyrocketing video fees for consumers; expand support for journalism; ensure diversity.

Brendan Carr has threatened to revoke licenses by wielding the FCC's authority to ensure that broadcast stations using public airwaves operate in the public interest, despite previous chairs saying the First Amendment prevents the FCC from revoking licenses based on content.

This new FCC boss (Brendan Carr) will be significantly worse than the last Trump FCC boss Ajit Pai. Even Pai refused to leverage government authority to harass broadcasters critical of Trump. Carr has no such reservations.

Yes, banning TikTok is unprincipled. But the article illustrates why we shouldn't rely on our Supreme Court's wacky FA jurisprudence to chart the future. We need principled experts to develop a regulatory scheme for social media. @evelyndouek.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Here's the latest biweekly installment in my AllSides series. It's my sixth, last, and most ridiculous national proposal for fixing public discourse. www.allsides.com/blog/proposa...

The UK's commercial news publishers come after publicly funded outlets for "providing a better user experience" than their advertising-choked sites; claim that providing users with an experience they prefer gives public media an unfair advantage. Just wow. pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/r...

Good article, except I hate when people try to redefine polarization as mere "advocacy" or "mobilization." Polarization is just bad, all it does it generate fountains of straw men, which then increases polarization. www.techpolicy.press/where-does-p...

A good surviving-Thanksgiving-with-family piece. The perspective reminds me very much of work by @zachelwood.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2024/11/27/o...
