There is nothing obvious here. The only thing that the Matthews era has definitively proven for me is that I don't know what better actually looks like.
Making the playoffs consistently vs. missing consistently is really only better for Rogers.

I don't know what the goal is but "getting better" hasn't been consistent with their actions over the past decade.. The last thing that improved the team both on paper and the ice was signing Tavares.
So the point is to stop wasting energy worrying about the minutiae.
