It's the jpeg artifacts. There is a kind of beaty in a raster image getting ever so slightly worse every time you download and upload them, compressing, aging, waring and tearing them into ever fuzzier messes that will eventually be barely legible. You philistines wouldn' know how to appreciate it.

Tearing down the USSR didn't create the central and eastern european countries. WWI liberated those nations from various empires. USSR occupied them after WWII, and the allied countries, inc. US, let it happen. If those nations hadn't wanted independence, the Soviet Union wouldn't have collapsed.
