Which will get more attention in tomorrow’s papers: the former president being old and frail, or the current president arresting members of the opposition party

👇🎯 Also, people need to internalize that they are <contracts> & this entire nonsense is not only an assault on research & higher education, but an attack on the very foundations of property rights & the rule of law in the Republic. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

THREAD: We recently heard that the Trump administration was leaning on the government of Gambia to help Elon Musk. For weeks, our team made phone calls, wrote letters and knocked on folks’ doors to try to confirm it. But we were stuck. So our reporters got on a plane to Banjul. 1/

"Moderate cultural positions" = "Come on, guys, there's certain types of people we all hate, right? You know the ones."

Wonder if there’s an example of what happens when you accept an adversary built piece of infrastructure. 🤔 “The team was stunned when over the course of a few months, they discovered that the Soviets had put permanent eavesdropping systems into the actual structure of the building.” 🙄 #GiftLink

"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."

The same kind of folks who spent years complaining about masks that slowed the spread of disease are now wearing masks to facilitate the spread of fascism

"I've trained 1000s of soldiers..." Trans man says, stunned, at being let go in the military. Nick, a transgender man on Tiktok, is going viral today after his video shows the impact of the trans military ban on his 18 year career. The latest from S. Baum. Subscribe to support our journalism.

It shouldn't have to be said but if you're law enforcement and you have to cover up your face while doing your job, you are not the good guys in this situation.

This woman has no idea what the Library of Congress is or how it works.

If kidnapped, what would you post that would alarm your followers without the kidnappers knowing you're asking for help? What's the point of the Oxford comma?

It sucks that the military is so central to our society, but it is. And while this is a very American thing that our government is doing, I'll note that in 1935, Germany expelled Jewish officers from the army.

2018 retweet from the now Pope on Trump's family separation

Behold the best pope joke so far

We understand the risk that comes from ignoring the science on vaccines or food safety. We take a greater risk when we ignore the experts on how to combat authoritarianism. Most university administrations have chosen self preservation as a strategy. It's a bad one. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o...

NEW: The rate of sepsis in Houston surged 63% after Texas banned abortion. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where hospital leaders empowered doctors to intervene before patients’ conditions worsened, it rose just 29%.

So, apparently it was DEI keeping our jets on carriers? wapo.st/3GGko7n

How many jets fell off carriers before they kicked trans people out of the military and fired the most qualified women generals?

Amber Thurman Candi Miller Josseli Barnica Porsha Ngumezi Nevaeh Crain Their deaths could've been prevented. Their lives should not be forgotten.

Between this and 60 Minutes, Paramount is engaging in massive, consequential censorship to curry favor with Trump.

Keep resisting!!

They keep willfully misunderstanding the issue to confuse good people. Trans people don’t think this series will be loaded with JKR’s bigotry. We KNOW the money from this series will be funneled by JKR directly into attacking the trans community in the media and courts.

Also, all dudes.

The first crime is that all of this wildly illegal & unconstitutional & requires immediate impeachment & removal. The second crime is that we, the richest country in world history, only spend $9 billion in a $1.7 <trillion> budget on the NSF. But that’s a discussion for once we stop the fascism.

authoritarians (and corporate power) hate publicly-funded media because (when implemented correctly) it can untether journalism from all the perverse financial incentives you see demonstrated daily by our feckless and endlessly exploitable ad engagement-based infotainment economy

The premise of all the concern over pediatric transgender medicine is that it's being given too quickly to too many children, and I continue to find it odd that every scrap of evidence I can find suggests that this isn't happening and never was.

The NYT opinion section is having a *rough* day.

Great one.

Look, if AI wanted to be useful for academic writers it would stop making up citations and instead learn to format them in whatever style the journal requires at touch of a button.

This is fascinating! Puts my "donate sweaters you haven't worn in two years" version of spring cleaning to shame.

Every now and then I just pause and think that … we could have just elected Kamala Harris, and we’d still have an economy that was the strongest in the world; we’d still have an American-led trans-Atlantic order; we’d be assured that our universities would remain the envy of the world; … (1/x)

Trying to explain that Chinese people do not want to buy Ford F-150s, but do want to pay a huge premium to consume higher education in the US. We are mostly a service economy, and Trump is trashing those services.

We should all be teaming up. Higher ed has the leverage, the talent, and the mission. Democratic capacity building is literally in our job description. Public universities should be leading this fight.

This feels a lot like that early period of Covid when some people were shouting about how bad it was going to be while guys like Trump and Musk were predicting it would be over by April.

University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards. It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.

Thanks for this 🧵, @gailsimone.bsky.social !

Over on X, a tale of the madness currently playing out with student visas is currently going viral on the basis of an astonishing quote from a judge calling what the Trump administration is doing “Kafkaesque.” The lawsuit is one of Banias. law’s emergency TRO cases and the quote is from 5 days ago.

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative. A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

Public universities may be this nation's single greatest domestic resource (The McRib notwithstanding).

Great news! I wonder how many rogue "law enforcement" cosplayers there are roaming the streets and terrorizing random people.

Angel of the Lord: He is not here, He is risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead. Alito: Okay, first of all, this violates ALL sorts of rules Thomas: This was a LAWFUL execution, who is God to interfere

Thousands show solidarity at #TransRightsAreHumanRights Demo in Parliament Square.

Everyone needs to understand what Elon and DOGE are building, an AI driven panopticon that will know everything about you and will be used to ensure compliance with their fascist agenda. They are creating a unified database of everything the federal government has on every single American. 🧵1/
