There will be a movement on social media towards serif fonts as more and more people named Al get annoyed with their name looking like the acronym AI

On Monday I’ll be starting at Google DeepMind as a Visiting Researcher for my sabbatical (Jan-Dec 2025). Looking forward to contributing to solving challenging problems in the AI+Optimization for power systems space!

Data center power ratings in MW vs MVA is a good point made by @agelston.bsky.social . If ~40% of a data center's energy consumption goes to the cooling system, and a large chunk of the cooling system's consumption is from AC motors, this is a large amount of reactive power. Which raises questions:

This is the only educational baby song I know so if anyone has other recommendations let me hear them

Boom! PJM now forecasts more than 30GW of summer peak load growth by the end of the decade. Summer peak demand: + 6.7GW by 2026 + 17.7GW by 2028 + 31.7GW by 2030

Kyri Georgia and Bridget’s first Christmas together ❤️ Decided to arrange the stockings in order of age with the exception of Bridget and Georgia which we switched

My middle name is danger. First name amperage last name voltage, sr. name fire

#EnergySky Duke Energy is demolishing a coal plant and putting batteries in its place - a great example of faster interconnection of new energy resources by utilizing existing grid assets! 💡🔌 (yes, they are also building a new gas plant nearby, but baby steps...) www.canarymedia.com/articles/bat...

I love all the guesses but the correct answer is that this is an image of cat litter on a basement floor illuminated by the Dyson V15 Detect, the best vacuum I’ve ever owned

Brownie points for whoever correctly identifies what this image is

Ice on power lines can be melted by temporarily overloading the line. High currents = high heat!

If one Amazon AI datacenter consumes around 1 GW, and 1 horsepower is 746 Watts, this means that the datacenter is rated at over a million horsepower That’s a lot of horses And an interesting mental visual

Folks: this is the energy starter pack you were looking for! You don't need any others. Only this one. Thank you @jameshewett.bsky.social for this public service go.bsky.app/6J1B7RK

When does seeing your baby smile and laugh stop feeling like drugs? Makes me cry 😭❤️

To be obnoxious I’m now only describing the power ratings of common household appliances in terms of horsepower rather than Watts (1 HP = 746 Watts) My frozen burrito requires 2 minutes when used with a 1.48 HP microwave

Is it more common for an IOU to own street lighting, or for a municipality to?

Going to invent heat pump hair dryers for those of us who want to multi-task working on our arm strength while styling our hair

recall part of the daylight savings time origin story

What do you do if your baby is only calmed by the gentle hum of transmission lines

The net sum of energy savings from energy efficiency upgrades across the years will certainly be offset from increased computing IMHO. But efficiency upgrades have key benefits at the distribution level - it’s not just about the net sum of demand, it’s about the location (and timing).

Going to make a more active effort to be on energy sky (wait, what did we decide to call it again?) Have just been a bit preoccupied with this little bean (she loves hikes and hates baths. Unclear her opinion about various energy technologies yet)

It arrived!

If you're a student doing research in energy systems, we're working on a grant that would let us support you in developing open data wrangling & software development skills. This short (<10min) survey will help us better understand your needs (ends Fri, Feb 2nd) 🔌💡 forms.gle/3pa9i3Fk5W8W...

Dear people who love cooking over flame, You or a handyperson can convert your gas stove to propane with a screwdriver, ~15 minutes & some hardware that may have shipped with your stove. Unlike gas, propane leaks don't wreck the climate & propane doesn't require a Rube Goldberg pipeline network🔌💡

One day I hope to meet some Bluesky mutuals, but for now, I’m still meeting people I know from Twitter like @kyrib.bsky.social.
