When I taught intro biology I spent a lot of time training bad AP habits out of the students. We let them bring in AP and skip that sequence but they are far less prepared for downstream courses if they do

Oof, sorry. 10-20% of all GM paid in similar boats, presumably. I guess we try to stay optimistic for as long as possible? Those who interact with me regularly may recognize this as a case of ‘do as I say, not as I do’ but since I have young kids I’m totally allowed to play that card

MIRA is (hopefully we can still use the present tense) a fantastic model under normal circumstances. I'm a big fan of the long-term lab evolution model. Selfishly, it really allowed us to change directions after a full lab turnover immediately post-covid. They're also a joy to review Vs R01s

Yep - I'm one of these. Flurry of emails on 1/22 and 1/23 from the Grants Management Specialist about effort/JIT tweaks, then radio silence. Original grant ended 2/28 so running on residual startup now

Will DM you the response in case they don’t want it to be public: suffice to say it’s uncertain and not optimistic

Any sign of an institutional response to that? Still none at NYU and an increasing number of us are now running entirely on leftover startup funds while we await… something

Just look at how we view hoodies. On Mark Zuckerberg, the hoodie is a symbol of whiz kid meritocracy breaking norms and developing the New Economy. On people like Trayvon Martin, the hoodie is sometimes seen as proof of criminality. Again, it's about the bodies beneath the clothes.
