I am genuinely curious how many people, roughly speaking, are defending the killings. There will always be a handful of ghouls no matter the topic. Is this that, or is it something more substantial? Anybody know?

I just don't understand how this isn't *exactly* what these people (by whom I mean the heavily online people who voted for Trump) complained about re DEI, identity politics, cancel culture, etc. It's just the same old illiberalism in different clothing.

This can't be true.

(I read it earlier on Twitter. He's just so smart and big picture oriented. He always makes so much sense to me.)

I don't think he's talking about the term.

Right. This is why it was the northern pols, not the southern ones, who wanted them counted as less than a whole person. (They wanted them not to count at all, in fact. The 3/5 was a compromise.)

Which election? The Wisconsin judge one?

The mistaken notion of the word "famine" as metaphor, simply because it's so alien and fantastical to modern audiences, reminds me of Gaza. (And of course of Sudan and Congo).

This was excellent. Thank you.

Hannah Arendt worried about this. She was concerned that an explicit Jewish state, forced to maintain a Jewish demographic majority, would trample the rights of the Palestinian Arabs. She expressly argued that Jews on the rebound from the Holocaust would be susceptible to oppressive rule.

The beauty of social media is that there is normally someone out there inclined to, interested in, happy to catch people up directly. So a "Hey, I'm not caught up on this, can anyone help me out?" is, like, literally, the sign of a vibrant and generous community.

Ouch. This says more about you than them. It's kinda mean-spirited, no?

I get in theory the notion of EO's or laws against terrorist activity and (less so) affiliation with terrorists, but how is it possible to issue an EO "against anti-Semitism"? Isn't that like making bigotry or racism against the law? How is that not thought crime or a violation of free expression?

Not these two, no. Au contraire.

This is particularly appropriate for anyone living in Ohio. Our two new senators have gone AWOL when it comes to responsiveness to their constituents.

The beautiful thing about our current situation is that nobody needs to argue about old times--your response is entirely divisive and counterproductive. Bernie's not running for office. We can all just cheer him on, as he is fighting for what most of us want.

Bernie Sanders values everything regular Democrats used to say they stood for.

My own former Congressman, Anthony Gonzalez, was among a handful of Republicans to impeach Donald Trump for the insurrection. He immediately paid the price; his political career is over. Idk how he feels today, but I hope it's something like righteous. The stakes are high but he did the right thing.

you fail to mention that nonforeign-born Americans who break a law nevertheless give birth to citizens. 2/2

So the entire argument rests on the fact that the parents "clearly did not come in amity"? That's not so clear at all! Many came in amity & lived years w/in the social compact here before having children. You presume everyone shares your narrow view of what amity means, and 1/

I have kept WaPo & NYT in spite of being unhappy at times. Re WaPo, i.e., according to all sources Bezos was 100% unconnected to editorial content until & except for that non-endorsement nonsense. It was a big deal, for sure, but I do think they remain better than most. Your examples are good, tho.

NYT is still better than most alternatives. Where do you get your news? Really asking.
