With Europeans sharply increasing their defence spending, the #Trump can do what he announced earlier. We can expect the #US to start withdrawing troops from #Europe soon.

If investors continue to ignore geopolitical risks, that could be a sign of a bigger downturn to come, rather than a bullish signal for those who continue to test the limits of their own conviction.

There are (scientific) facts and (historical) points of view. My view is that the decennia long uneven distribution of the benefits and costs of globalisation (including migration) has undermined trust in traditional politicians and paved the way for extreme political experimentation.

It’s politics, a gamble as the current anti-migration politicians have democracy undermining tendencies. But what is the alternative, as ‘open border’ politicians keep ignoring the ‘hidden’ costs? To repeat only (!) the age-old ‘rational’ mantra’s does not create trust that change will now come.

Politician’s used the ‘a tide raises all ships’ mantra and were deaf to complaints. Anti-migration politician exploit this weakness. In a democracy they provide counterweight and provide a rational, though dangerous, choice for those that are neglected since the seventies.

Migration is not an intellectual debate, but a societal choice, a political issue. Intellectually it might be irrational, but politically not. Politics is about power and in a democracy people choose (rationally) for those that - considering the current rules of the game - best serve their interests

The issue is not migration per se, from a macro-perspective, but the skewed distribution of its benefits and costs. As long as voters can remember politicians never succeeded at redressing this imbalance. If you’re on the receiving end of costs it is rational to be anti-migration.
