TIL, when trying to use `git restore --staged <file>` on a repo that just got initialized returns "fatal: could not resolve HEAD". apparently it's been a bug for a few years now despite `restore` being the new tool to handle this type of occurrence. using `git reset <file>` works fine in this case.
