1. we don't know if trump has invoked the insurrection act 2. *even if he has* the insurrection act does not unlock any new substantive powers for the president. it allows the president to send use the military to enforce existing law. that's it! the constitution is still 100% in force.

me and 2000 Patriots on our way to go secure home depot

Trump just federalized the California National Guard — deploying Californians to put down protests against the ICE secret police. It’s a radical & dangerous escalation against our state — yet another attack by this administration on our democracy. We won’t sit by & let Trump terrorize California.

Hegseth is now threatening to send the Marines to LA to suppress protesters against ICE’s brutal assault on immigrant garment workers. Just process that: Sending in the *military* to crack down on protesters. We’re now at severe risk of martial law. That’s what they’ve wanted all along.

More relevant than ever

this site really isn’t ready for a serious news event

LAPD statement: “Today, demonstrations across the City of Los Angeles remained peaceful”

The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles — not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don't give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.

What’s happening in LA right now is a sign of the Trump regime’s brittleness. They’re dangerous but they’re losing. To a large extent they’re dangerous BECAUSE they’re losing.

Not holding my breath but if anything should lead Padilla and Schiff to stop treating their work in the Senate like business as usual, it should be armed soldiers menacing their constituents without provocation.

As a reminder, we are one week out from a nationwide mobilization against the fascist coup. Find the nearest protest in your neck of the woods here. www.nokings.org

It is extremely important right now to demonstrate that people who believe in American democracy are not so easily cowed.

its really obvious he never wanted the job of being president as much as just the title of president

Appropriately dark representation of what’s happening to our nation. TW: police ultimately fire tear gas grenades at the woman waving the American Flag. This is happening in and around LA. God save us all. 🇺🇸 #ICE #LosAngeles #SoCal #DHS

would be a good time for journos to write on the VP's follow list

“shinji’s mom” to the tune of “stacy’s mom”

I completely second this. I’m frequently disturbed by how many people on here don’t seem to actually know or talk to anyone in the military or national guard (or who has been in them in the recent past).

Seriously, help us control the narrative. Let every normie you know know: LA is chill, peaceful and safe right now. The protests are peaceful and there is no imminent threat to anyone. Even LAPD agrees.

Military style ICE raids in our communities. David Huerta was beaten and dragged away. Because he saw them and stood up for justice. Because he’s not afraid. Neither are we. On MONDAY let's #FreeDavidHuerta, #FreeThemAll 11:00 AM @ Grand Park in Downtown LA (200 N Grand Ave)

For our LA friends - please show up if you can. We stand in solidarity with SEIU and David. He's showing us immense courage. Let's show him it's contagious.

Ahead of No Kings Day, a couple trainings we have coming up that might be useful: Safety and Deescalation: www.mobilize.us/nokings/even... Know Your Rights (w/ACLU): act.aclu.org/a/2025-kyr-t...

I’ve long felt that California is both for better and for worse the most consummately American state, but tonight it feels like it’s definitely for better

Something worth remembering about immigration: it's not a choice between values and pocketbook. You get both. The best evidence is that immigration enriches us all. If you want to convince yourself, imagine the USA didn't ban Chinese immigration in 1882, or immigration more broadly in 1924.

I forget who - I think a libertarian - tweeted once "my most right wing take is we should have open borders to triple global GDP. my most left wing take is we should have open borders because the status quo is a massive human rights violation"

Mein Führer... the Venice Beach Erewhon... has already fallen.

the white house thinks brute force is, no pun intended, a trump card. they don’t anticipate pushback and they don’t know how to handle it with anything other than escalation. the issue is that each escalation is itself a gamble. if protesters refuse to back down, you’ve lost face. (1/?)

notably in China which *doesn't* have those licensing requirements 'plumber' and 'electrician' barely exist; instead you have generalized handymen (often attached to housing compounds). This produces extremely cheap service but also *frequently* incompetent service.

Every time Trump "fires" someone, the narrative is that they were completely worthless and unqualified from the start. If that's true, why does he keep hiring such people?

someday I would like to believe that people will stop calling the MA universal health care law, drafted and passed by a democratic house and senate and signed begrudgingly by Romney under the threat of a veto override "Mitt Romney's plan"

I loathe Musk as much as anyone else but for a sitting president to openly threaten a private citizen over what political donations he or she chooses to make is a reminder of how authoritarian this country is becoming by the day - by the hour even!

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Local woman once again forces herself to feel solidarity with Los Angeles

It would genuinely be weird if trump weren’t in the Epstein files, the feds put so much shit in criminal investigation files or even just rando files; trump was one of many public figures who Epstein was on camera hanging out with itd be weird if that obvious research weren’t at least noted…

The state is a guarantor of reliable violence under the right circumstances and politics is to a first approximation debating what those circumstances should be.

In preparation for next week’s parade/demonstration, tanks are being moved into Washington, DC today. Unprecedented. (Photo from a colleague in DC)

Yesterday, David Huerta, a champion for SEIU workers across California and a friend, was detained and injured by ICE while exercising his first amendment right. No one in our country should be subjected to harm for legally & peacefully protesting. David should be released from custody immediately.
