Via "One First," my quick write-up of President Trump's "Presidential Memorandum" purporting to federalize 2000 California National Guard troops; the relevant legal authorities for doing so; and how the move is both a modest *and* dangerous escalation of what's going on in and around Los Angeles:

We always knew where this was going

Big point that is being missed: without the insurrection act, the activated Guard troops are now federal army and cannot Do law enforcement. Period

It doesn’t matter to Trump that Pete Hegseth endangered U.S. armed forces by sharing attack plans with his wife, his brother and a journalist. It matters to Trump that Hegseth is willing to order American troops to attack American civilians. That’s why Hegseth is there.

Bernie Sanders on the Trump-Musk feud: "The story of what happened last week is you are living increasingly in an oligarchic society. Musk said to Trump, 'Listen, I bought $270m to get you elected. I bought you the presidency.'"

Donald Trump deploying the military against protesters is what happens in fascist countries.

FYI, in the Presidential Memorandum: “The Secretary of Defense may employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as necessary to augment and support the protection of federal functions and property in any number determined appropriate in his discretion.” www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Law Professor @rgoodlaw.bsky.social catches DOJ in a contradiction in the Abrego Garcia case. A major one.

The Trump administration is refusing to tell agencies that received information about the WilmerHale executive order that the executive order has since been declared "null and void" unless they are the 26 named defendant agencies.

🚨WOW. It turns out that a "Tren de Aragua gathering" the Trump admin said it broke up in March ... was just a BIRTHDAY PARTY. None of the people arrested at the party seem to have any criminal record — and none have been charged criminally in the months since it happened. Read the story below.

NEW: Though Elon Musk is gone, DOGE is here to stay. Russell Vought, a Christian nationalist and Project 2025 architect, appears to be at the helm of the faux-agency — and the slash-and-burn effort against the federal government may be on the cusp of an even darker turn. by: @jaknutson.bsky.social

Bonkers

Complicated decision! Boasberg agrees with the DOJ and finds that the U.S. does NOT have constructive custody over the CECOT detainees, but, finding that their removal was a violation of due process, orders DHS to find a way to “facilitate the ability [of the people in CECOT] to seek habeas relief.”

Ed Martin is expanding his operation, and it’s as dangerous as it sounds. The US Department of Justice’s pardon attorney, Ed Martin Jr, is now laying the groundwork to pardon even more of Trump’s allies, this time focusing on the Republican fake electors who tried to help overturn the 2020 election.

Republicans don’t want you to believe the analysis of nonpartisan professionals about their disastrous tax bill. They want you to believe the GOP’s professional liars instead.

This is outrageous. A federal worker at our DC town hall talks about how employees are being asked to write letters stating their support for Trump. Our loyalty is to country not any particular president. As the woman said, “what the literal fuck.” open.substack.com/pub/jimacost...

Yes! The answer to “Real Men do [toxic thing]” is not actually “Real Men do [less toxic thing].” It’s “Why the fuck are you so obsessed with this primitive gender essentialism?”

Republicans are not pushing for higher restrictions for voting in an election because they actually BELIEVE that there is a citizenship issue with voter fraud. They do it because it suppresses the vote and people stay home, which benefits their party. Don't fall for it. apnews.com/article/trum...
