I did feel for the mother for the first few “decades.” It was clear that she wasn’t someone who enjoyed or had an instinct for cooking, so her being pigeonholed into doing it on hard mode (until the appliances and ingredients became more modern and recognizable) was tough to watch.

The Food Network aired a Canadian version of Back in Time for Dinner a few years ago. It was fascinating to watch.

Like a little summary of the morning so you can know what the rest of the day will be about.

I’ve gotten a bit under half a pound of green snow peas, so it won’t be a total loss, but I was really looking forward to the Beauregardes. I have been trying to encourage the plants to set fruit by reminding them how delicious stir-fried pea greens are, with mixed results.

I sort of expect this all to be nothing but kayfabe, but part of me has been wondering if it’s a real case of buyer’s remorse.

Wait, your mother is JulieSpins? I’ve admired her sense of color for years!

I have a couple of hostas if you would like any seeds saved. I would have to go out when it’s light to see what they actually look like, though. We had a very pretty one at the old house before the flood; alas, it was not salt-tolerant.

I am very envious of your California produce!

This is peak Toms River.

I’m so sorry, Sarah.

I hope the interview goes well!

Happy birthday!

They’ll either end up soup with rutabaga greens or a stir-fry with my vivid choi that was also starting to bolt, depending on who in the house gets around to cooking them first, so they’re definitely not going to go to waste!

You have saved my dreams of purple turnip cake! I’ll make room for them in my succession planting plans. I thought about just letting them go and saving seeds, but I thought they might be extra prone to bolting and I also didn’t want to risk hybridization with a brassica I’m seed-saving.

Radishes seem like they’d be such fun to grow, but then you’re stuck with all these radishes. That said, my first-ever attempt at growing a radish (purple daikon) this year has been kind of an abject failure because they started to bolt before forming any roots to speak of.

It was such a misreading on their part. When I was going through my receipts from last year to calculate my Use Tax for the state, I was a little shocked by how many Target purchases I made in 2024. That spending fell off a cliff after they made their announcement about rolling back DEI.

I love this! I’m a copy editor and I think I may need one.

I was looking for the Jersey Diners in this thread! I love pretty much everything they’ve put out for this alternate identity.

Yes! I am long of torso but short of arm, and having to reach past a fully open door can be a challenge. I did learn how to remove and disassemble the door after the soup-through-the-vent-and-between-the-panes-of-glass incident, though that is not something I want to do on the regular.

I am not sure if the ultra-high-end appliances have better heat shielding or more thoughtful construction, but putting circuit boards directly above the box that gets very hot and also fills up with steam is not an ideal choice.

Oof. If I ever get to set up a kitchen how I really want it, I’ll have a separate wall oven and stovetop and no stainless (ironically, this house had that before the previous owners renovated it to have a range; they also botched the range hood when they moved the stove so it leaks into the attic).
comment in response to post
It’s not just you. The glass top electric we have now is much harder to keep clean/presentable than the coil stove we had at the old house. The 1970s appliance colors may have been loud, but at least they didn’t show every smudge, spatter, and fingerprint.

They’re back? I’ll have to be on the lookout!

Sending you big hugs. I’ve been going through it with health stuff and constantly waiting for the next shoe to drop has been all-consuming.

All but the last instar look like malevolent little Kate Spade handbags that are gradually increasing in size. The last instar looks like Darth Maul. Also, if you’re stomping them, approach from the front, because they’ll jump forward and under your foot.

This is our 4th year (I think? Time flies when you aren’t having fun) with them, so we have reported them in the past. There’s so much tree-of-heaven around that we will always have a reservoir and they adore our fig bushes. They do not adore being sprayed with soapy water, however.
comment in response to post
We’ve had them here for a few years now, so I think they aren’t taking reports anymore. I did leave a message with the county Master Gardners’ helpline for the heck of it, just to make sure there isn’t some secret SLF reporting tipline that I can’t find.

I was so sad that Francis didn’t get a chance to replace Dolan before he passed.

Blossom end rot is so annoying. I feel like I’m constantly throwing garden lime at my tomatoes and squash to try to keep it at bay.

I’m on double rations of antihistamines and wearing N95s consistently and I’m still completely miserable. I’m hoping that the rain will give us a temporary respite.

So, I am not of an age to have played against him on the college trivia circuit, but he was still very much a cautionary tale of the “don’t be like that dude” sort in the circles I traveled in the late ‘90s.

I know they’re not the right bird, but I like to channel my inner Stevie Nicks and sing little duets with them when they visit the trees behind my house.

We need all the luck we can get. If/when she’s admitted, there’s also a strong possibility of hospital delirium again and they won’t really be able to do anything testing-wise until Monday.

I just learned about the cannellini beans, that is. I had no idea that they were also kidney beans.
