In my experience, the biggest obstacle to brick and mortar retail is the obscene rent that commercial landlords charge

These are the same kind of people who made that Apple ad where they crushed all those musical instruments into a shiny iPad

Why do you think W is more likely to outlive Clinton?

I understand the argument you're making, but Gates isn't the best person to choose to make it.

They might "seem" to happen daily, but they don't. The thing that isn't right is that people are allowing their fear to override the facts, which are that crime is down considerably from the 80s.

Big fan from Canada here! Just wondering, though: why did I get served up an ad for the Conservative Party of Canada on this episode?

Again, no one is saying she had to have read the Harris position papers! You are infantilizing this woman. She, like many others, voted because of one issue that she thought would benefit her. She knew about Trump's misogyny and voted for him anyway. We have to start expecting more of each other.

Did you stop to actually read the thread? Nowhere is it suggested that we treat all Trump voters like klansmen. It's about acknowledging that politics is life. It doesn't exist in some separate realm that you only enter in the voting booth.

Lithgow is still happy to work with Mel Gibson, so this isn't all that surprising.

I agree. It's just frustrating that some people need the impact to hit really close to home before they clue in.

Personally, I find it hard when the "folly" involves a willingness to allow others to suffer.

Maybe don't accuse someone of arguing in bad faith when the data isn't actually where the author sends you.
Also, even with that data set, the difference between the number of men in public and private schools is pretty negligible. It's definitely not the main takeaway you seem to want it to be.

Did you actually follow the link? As far as I can tell, there's nothing about men and women there.

I don't disagree with that at all.

The article doesn't say that. It only says that white men are more likely to be at private schools than public, but doesn't say by how much or cite any source. There's nothing to indicate that men are being kept out of higher paying teaching jobs.

I would say this is the more relevant takeaway from that article: "male teachers in the U.S. make about $2200 more than female teachers"

I'm sure better marketing could help. I just don't think that most men are avoiding those professions because they're worried people will think they're predators.

"A lot of women won't let men interact with or look after kids."
I don't believe that this is true in a statistically meaningful way.

I keep hoping that one of them will have even a tenth of the moral clarity and fortitude of Muhammad Ali, but that doesn't seem likely to happen.

I agree that there's something to the different educational outcomes for boys and girls, but I think his arguments as to why it's happening and what should be done are not great.

Exactly. Men don't go into the HEAL professions, as he calls them, because men devalue them. Women don't go into the trades, for example, because it's inhospitable to them. Not the same thing.

He reads and cites the data in an incomplete way because he wants to show how much progress women have made, since that is central to his overall narrative.

Here's a quick example. He claims that "in almost half of families where both parents work full time, mothers earn as much or more than fathers," citing the data below. Strictly speaking, that's not wrong. But you could just as easily say that "76% of fathers earn as much or more than mothers."

If by "hard truths" you mean "dishonestly interpreted stats," then yes.

Do you think you guys might do Richard Reeves' "Of Boys and Men"? Because I'm reading it now and it's making my head explode. In a bad way.

They also show this list from the DNC website that they feel proves the party doesn't care about men, yet every single category other than "women" includes men!

I don't know if this one is cited in the article, but for me it's Mario Lemieux scoring five goals five different ways in the same game.

Here he is hand delivering an Oscar to Roman Polanski. So wholesome!
I get the love for Ford. I also grew up on Han Solo and Indiana Jones. And he's so delightfully grumpy now! But he's also gross.
