I heard a good podcast that really laid this issue out clearly. I’ve repeated what they talked about to a lot of people.

If you do it before next fall, let me and @laurelmack.bsky.social know, we're teaching a new onomastics course in the fall ;)

But on a sad note, several of my colleagues who are at US schools but are not US citizens decided not to come to the conference for fear of arbitrarily not being let back in. It's hard to process how much that sucks.

I find it's most helpful to just go to 50501's website directly. (As an aside, it was interesting to hear that the Pod Save America guys said they hadn't really heard about the April 5 one, and when they asked people later how they'd heard about it...) www.fiftyfifty.one

Also this. "Ideas" are what universities do, and I think we can all be certain that they're not only scared of ideas that "cross the US border illegally" (!!)

Are they going to do that though? Standing up after you shamefully abase yourself is even harder than not caving to begin with.

Though I think in the Stuart-Smith paper you folks specifically only focus on stops in stressed syllables?

Yes, thank you! They’ve got great info about stress for sure. (And if you ever do word position, please let me know! 😅)

Sigh, yes, but by now there should be a more recent, large scale study on this topic with way more conditions, tons of speakers, and modern stats! (I’m just always surprised when something we take to be so core is based on a paper from the 60s!)

Could be! But is there work controlling for the VOT/vowel duration relationship that still shows that stress and/or initial word position condition a longer VOT? I'm looking for prosodic effects on VOT (even if relative VOT), not on domain or prominence strengthening more generally.

This undergrad thesis (from 2022!) might be the most comprehensive thing out there, but it has some limitations (understandably!)

Some papers show that phrasal accent lengthens VOT (e.g., Cole et al. 2007, Cho and Keating 2009), but either they use only stressed syllables, or stress actually doesn't have an effect.

Oh, I might have jumped the gun by about 2 minutes--looks like the whole tour is being cancelled. I hope he doesn't sell one single book. This isn't nearly enough of a consequence for him, but we can enjoy a minute of delicious schadenfreude, at least.
