I refuse to accept that cruelty and complacency is all we have to offer. A better world is possible, and worth our collective effort.

at least he didn't do something truly reckless like try to forgive student loans

On the long-planned Iran War: sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/i-spent-no...

May it be that all people are safe. May it be that all people are well. May it be that all people are peaceful. May it be that all people have minds of loving kindness. If I have accumulated any merit in this wandering life then may it go to the safety, well-being, and peace of all people.

I wonder if the reason nobody is stopping this is that it allows folks to disavow the kidnappers if they grab someone who gets too good a lawyer or too much media attention? The folks doing this seem unlikely to have scruples that would stop them from throwing loyal agents to the wolves...

Ryan Coogler’s ‘SINNERS’ will release on Max on July 4. See which other movies are coming soon to Max: bit.ly/MaxJune25

Save the dates: 7/4 & 7/17, our next days of action! 🚨 On July 4th, 50501 chapters will be hosting a community day of action. Some will also be protesting on the 4th. On July 17th, 50501 chapters will be organizing a mass mobilization in coalition with other orgs. Some may also host community aid.

I cannot truly explain how it feels to have previously been a contributing writer to a paper that has now dedicated itself to destroying my community. I want to say it's weird, or scary. But it's more than that. It's radically destabilizing. My past and present selves don't recognize each other.

it would be glib to say that infosec people have been warning about this kind of thing for decades, but i'm now wondering what "digital sovereignty" genuinely looks like like if you were writing a cyberpunk novel in the 90s you wouldn't make this a plot point because it'd sound too stupid

turns out climate change will cost dramatically more than economists predicted, and the cost of addressing it is actually negative. oops! prospect.org/environment/...

"I asked ChatGPT" "I asked Grok" ok well I asked Gandalf and he said he has not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm

The more people stop complaining that they don't have power, the more energy they'll have to identify and act on things they *can* control. That's riskier than just blaming others, of course, but has a much better chance of creating positive outcomes.

White folks who complain that Juneteenth is a made-up holiday are almost as ridiculous as white folks who manage to stand on stolen land and complain that the folks it was stolen from had objections to the theft.

This is not a "both sides" issue. Left wing politicians don't pose with weapons in campaign photos. The left doesn't pardon thousands of violent insurectionists who defaced the US Capitol.

Excuses to avoid the protest: -I don't have a sign (Use cardboard and markers/crayons. You don't have to spend money, I promise.) -I don't know anyone who's going (Me either. But I'm gonna go and yell my head off) -It's pointless (Nope. The American people have power & we can exercise it)

It doesn't just sound absurd, it is absurd. It's another example of the dichotomy being pushed by the right that their comfort/ convenience should outweigh any one else's safety/ dignity.

Anybody else noticing that while there is a lot of talk about how cops are being attacked, every single video coming out shows cops reacting violently to nonviolent civilians? If the cops are being attacked (or even spit on), where's the body cam video of it happening?

The political right likes to talk about growing the economy, but they want to go about it bass-ackwards, insisting that financial stability be available to fewer rather than more people by increasing income inequality. But what if we made better choices instead?

Study out of India finds that reducing financial concerns could increase productivity. A cash infusion led to paying off debts followed by becoming more productive at work. Output increased by 7%, and they made fewer costly, unintentional mistakes. Now imagine UBI. academic.oup.com/qje/article-...

So material that's most of 100 years old - I suppose there's gonna be nothing in there that we would consider cringe-worthy these days. /Headdesk

Get ready for Saturday by watching the @aclu.org’s “Know Your Rights” training to help keep all of our #NoKings Day events safe and non-violent.

This regime is entirely comfortable defining disagreement or mockery as violence and talking as though white supremacists having their feelings hurt is worse than others having their family forcibly ripped apart.

lmao

For decades the NRA and other gun nuts told us that their guns were to protect us all from a tyrannical government. So a tyrannical government is here, they are all sitting on their asses, and the people who want gun control have taken to the streets to defy the tyrannical government instead.

Trump sent the troops to CA without fuel, food, water or a place to sleep. If anyone is treating the troops disrespectfully, it is Donald Trump.

If your first instinct to a community defending their friends, families, and neighbors from murderous fascists looking to kidnap them is to say, "Maybe they should be more polite about it," you're probably not on the side you think you are.

Folks saying nonviolence "isn't effective" are missing one fundamental thing... context about what you mean by "effective." Does violence cause more terror? Create more immediate obedience? Sure. Is that what we're optimizing for? Folks terrorized into performing submission?

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

If they're trying to start the violence they're a fed. If they're trying to start the violence they're a fed. If they're trying to light a spark, Then they're *definitely* a narc. If they're trying to start the violence they're a fed. (Sing to the tune of "if you're happy and you know it...)

1) Enough wealth already exists to power a post-scarcity society in which everyone has their needs more than met. 2) Gross inequality of late-stage capitalism keeps much of that wealth in a few hands. 3) Those with the wealth are desperate to destroy democracy before everyone realizes 1 & 2.

I can’t understand, after the last 30 years of it happening EVERY TIME, how people think AI is going to stay free Once everyone’s reliant, it’ll cost a fortune we just “have” to pay Its energy needs will cost us the only world we have All so someone doesn’t have to write their own Reddit shitpost

Honestly kind of fitting that this level of catty public breakup between two aging divas is happening during pride month

The news always has a perspective because it's written by humans. That's not wrong, but it is part of how we need to evaluate information...

Lots of questions about Kobo, #kobowritinglife and how, when and why we are using AI. Putting "AI" in the same sentence as "authors", "books" or "publishers" makes a lot of alarm bells go off, and for good reason. 1/
