Logan Mountstuart is a character in a novel by William Boyd, but I had to spell it a bit differently. I like riding my bike, nature stuff, transition to living sustainably, learning Welsh and not tolerating bullying. I'm also not an American.

Or like saying we shouldn't accept any change because we've accepted the dangers of the thing we've become used to.

And how's the evidence looking for cars driven by human drivers then?
comment in response to post
Well of course there's no evidence of 100% safety - never will be. Autonomous vehicles will bring about changed behaviour. What I hope to see is less car ownership and more shared use eg self driving taxis. This could reduce the sense of entitlement of drivers and move us away from motonormativity.

I prefer it if cars didn't run over people.

You can see incompetent and reckless drivers every time you're out on the road. Could autonomous vehicles do worse?

Good point. Even though those people will never know it was them. I will read your paper. Thanks again.

Excellent video. I agreed with all of it and learnt a few things, but I'm just left thinking about poor Lee Waters who had his political career destroyed by the reaction to the 20 limit in Wales. I don't see how any political party can take on motor normativity and survive. Feeling despondent now.

Ahj GCN, of course! Thanks.

Please can you recommend any resources (slides, videos etc) as an introduction to motonormativity? Perhaps you've done something yourself!

Can't believe no one's done Catch 44 already.

We will just have to manage without you Harry. The sooner we get rid of the rest of his family the better.

True, but better than a car.

Thanks for that. This is mine. My typical trip is 4 miles into Chepstow and back, so this represents more than 150 trips over 18 months. I was off for a couple of months after a knee replacement op but it helped get me back on the road again.

Sure. But if there was a similar death rate from aircraft crashes each year the aircraft would be grounded. But we just let people carry on driving.
comment in response to post
So do we just accept the death toll from driving?
comment in response to post
I looked up road deaths in British Columbia. In 2024, there were 315 people killed on the roads [RoadSafetyBC]. That's about 6 people each week. The nine people who we understand have tragically lost their lives in Vancouver is equivalent to about 10 normal days. The tragedy continues daily.

Good news. The graphic shows NOx was already on the way down in previous years. Removing vehicles will consolidate it.

"You can be told the car is unsafe but a driver is never told they are unsafe ..." This is the real problem. There is no means to take a driver off the road *for any reason* until they are convicted of an offence. We should have mandatory requalification every 5 years.

For a brief moment I allowed myself to believe we might get this in the UK - or at least some movement towards it - if we could get Corbyn's Labour party elected. I think we've lost the chance for at least a generation.

Entitled drivers again. Well I'll be avoiding CK food stores from now on.

Wow! I stopped there the other evening (when the shop was shut) to use the fast chargers near the entrance. I imagine they're not solar. Shop looked good though.

An electric bike kept me on the road before and after my knee replacement. Being on the acoustic is still a joy.
comment in response to post
I am now a user of the word 'acoustic' to describe my non-electric bikes. Thank you.

Yes. So the energy of the reaction also oxidises some of the nitrogen.
comment in response to post
Thank you. Now I get it.

My knowledge of chemistry is still GCSE level. So I'm still at this level of understanding hydrogen + oxygen → water 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O Where does the NOx come from? I understand there will be pollutants from producing the hydrogen, but I don't understand how it produces NOx when burning it.

It doesn't say clearly but the government announcement looks as though it's aimed at England only.
comment in response to post
Well the actual announcement says The funding will be made available to providers... I'm not clear who the providers might be - developers, local authorities, housing associations? Anyone know?

The local MP said the decision would "finally deliver a solution to the traffic chaos" faced by motorists. I remember something like that being said about the Dartford Bridge when it was built.

At Chepstow station, like many others, I imagine you can only access one platform without climbing steps. Recently a woman arrived from Cardiff with a baby in a pushchair and was unable to get the train back because of the footbridge.

That was a fascinating article. My dad used to work on Sunderland's at Pembroke Dock and elsewhere when he was doing his RAF national service in nearly '50s. Air frame fitter he was.

I'm not a tax expert so check this out for yourself, but I've just done my parents estate and found that both partners get the 325k allowance, doubling what a couple can leave without inheritance tax. Which is another reason why hardly anybody pays inheritance tax, farmers included.

Whereabouts is this? I want to look it up on the OS map.

It's an asteroid on steroids now.
