and the sitting at a table (as opposed to scattered around a living room) also seems to be a big part of the magic. I think it's because everyone has a chair and a defined place-setting. Everyone is deliberately there, in their place, sharing time, and food, sometimes there is cake!

I can't think why the LNP (our shitty conservatives) lost so comprehensively at the last federal election. I mean, I can, but this sort of bullshit alienates them from the electorate in between times - "we hate these immigrant people, just like you do, right!" and no, no, we don't. Fuck off.

meanwhile, the melbourne South Sudanese community lived in fear for almost 3 years of these arseholes trying to create this moral panic, saying Melburnians were too scared to go to dinner and FIRST OF ALL we would be like those people buying yummy street food at the protest; and second of all: NO.

a couple isolated incidents. And the conservative media and pollies did not let it go, despite Melburnians and the POLICE saying "this is incorrect" and they only shut up after they lost big at the state election. They fucked it so hard, there is a wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African...

Yup. Definitely "this is normal people pushed to action because of shitfuckery".

If one of them looks up directly at me, as they do the Completely Normal Thing of scanning the street before they put their hand on the door, I give them a cheerful little wave. Their faces do not know what to do. I don’t care so long as the workers are okay and get paid, but it is amusing.

Best bit is when I went to sit outside in my car (quieter and safer and I can see everything through the window), the place next door in this highly respectable suburban shopping strip just says “massage” and judging how furtively guys are going in and out, I think they offer more than that.

Oh noes! Some people came in and snagged the free “big” dryer but they had three small washing machines’ worth of stuff so fair enough. Also a tall white man in a rugby top told them a smaller set of dryers would be more efficient. What would we do without tall white men? They ignored him.

Oooh two more dryers just came free. I have my eye on them.
