Germany had a lock on pre-WWII science. Americans used to learn to speak German just to go there to be trained. Then, well, WWII happened and nobody wanted to listen to German scientists anymore, obviously. The U.S. took over and led science. Now it’s back to Germany, thanks to The Regime.
