I totally understand that WotC wants more approachable (and marketable) protagonists. Iirc, writing stories about literal gods was incredibly challenging to write an engaging conflict for. It was still the time when old heads were just starting and the nostalgia is powerful.

I think you're missing the last part of their post. "Not playable cards." We used to be the Planeswalker battling another Planeswalker. Summoning monsters, casting fireballs drawing on the mana from the land and even enchanting the world as we use random artifacts to help us in our struggle.
