Oh. Lol. Ask dot com (what Jeeves turned into) is now literally AI powered. They killed Jeeves and replaced him with a robot that lies. Ok.
comment in response to post
most "AI" powered search is just doing that but then lying to you about the results

back then most engines couldn't process "what is a bear in the context of the queer community" you would have to just type "bear" or "bear AND queer NOT ursus" or something

Hi kids. AskJeeves was a pre-Google search whose main gimmick was that you could search using natural language instead of search operators;

this is actually a Human Thing. the other day a student came up to me and started speaking French and I nearly replied with a garbled mush of German, Japanese, and Greek. Despite mostly understanding what he'd said.

"we have always been at war with East Asia" etc etc

god, this is just the theme right now, isn't it? Some jackass in power kills millions while everyone else is begging him to stop (see: Putin, Bibi, Trump, Musk, literally every billionaire). We have to stop blaming each other.

Yeah. Like in my case, I currently work a customer facing full time day job, and I'm exhausted when I get home. Asking me to do a test *on top of* the portfolio is like. What was the portfolio for and why are you eating even *more* of my weekends for something I might not even get?

Karmic DEBT, autocorrect. JFC.

(sorry I've been reading the Pali canon / early Buddhist texts in preparation for studying Buddhist/Greek syncretism for no other reason than It's Interesting)

(note: unlike Christian hell, you do eventually leave Buddhist hell, & also nobody *puts* you there, your own actions *take you* there.) (also "you" is an illusion so jot that down)

If he did actually end world hunger right now, he could probably knock ... Eh, 50 billion years off. Ish.

Unfortunately 100 trillion years is only as long as this universe will last, so, rats will have to be reinvented in another universe first.

I finished another draft of the writing portfolio!!! This time it has links to publicly available articles online (including that time I interviewed Harlan Ellison!) Today is final cover letter and resume polish! EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!

Arrrgh I want to but ironically I gotta do a job application

I mean you always look cool

The original (much like Jurassic Park) missed the point of the book, but had enough cool stuff going for it that it ended up overshadowing the book. The sequels? ghghfjhfdhdfhhshggc. 🤮
comment in response to post
And I can't even blame them, no matter how bad I want to see Guillermo del Toro take a crack at the story. Like. Those sequels were *ass*.
comment in response to post
Like why are we even making a portfolio if you're gonna give us a test

I don't, but I've been out of (video) games for like 10 years. Could somebody DM me with deets so I don't step in it?
comment in response to post
but by god did they cook one-handed and I hope they all get $500,000 and like. a pony. (They won't get either but you know???)

Done. And I hate that I'm unsurprised by this. Why is it that game companies have some of the worst HR and hiring practices on the planet?
comment in response to post
I'm just starting to get back into the industry; can you DM me the [company] so I don't waste my time?
comment in response to post
/raises hand Having been out of the industry for a while, which studio is this, so I know not to even try? You can DM me.

God I wish people at my workplace would allow me to collapse in a hall to recover

Bud I think we may be having severe psychosomatic stress reactions

People have asked me why I don't just write a novel. Because I'm actually not good at that! I'm good at *writing for games*, which is a very different skill set than "being a novelist." For one thing, a LOT more collaboration is happening!

Oh here's an actual example I did: mashing up a free for commercial use photo of chains hanging in the dark with lava, & adding a painterly texture. It WAS faster than doing the same thing by hand in Photoshop. But again, this was a while ago, & ... Yeah.
comment in response to post
That IS an actual use case for these things though: "hey can you mash together this photo I took of leaves with this one I took of a person?" But even then I'd rather avoid modern ones, I don't need a random Mickey Mouse in there.
comment in response to post
I realized I can't quite say I never ever used GenAI, because I *did* use a very early model trained on public domain work back in like idk 2018? to a) make stock photos & other images painterly and b) merge photos that I took together. Haven't used one since.
